occupation

Steve Jobs is a biography film about the life of Steve Jobs directed by Danny Boyle . The script was written by Aaron Sorkin on the basis of the authorized biography of the same name by Walter Isaacson from 2011. Michael Fassbender plays the leading role in the title . Kate Winslet , Seth Rogen , Katherine Waterston , Jeff Daniels and Michael Stuhlbarg can also be seen in other roles .

The film was first shown on September 5, 2015 at the Telluride Film Festival . The film premiered in Germany on November 12, 2015.

After Jobs from 2013, in which Ashton Kutcher played the lead role, the film is the second biography since the death of the Apple founder, who died in 2011 . As early as 1999, the television film The Silicon Valley Story told the beginnings of Apple and Microsoft.

action

The film shows events behind the stages of three major product presentations: that of the Macintosh in 1984, that of NeXT in 1988 and that of the iMac 1998. It is not the products presented that are in the foreground, but rather a cross-section through the life of Steve Jobs with all commanded his internal and external conflicts.

production

Pre-production

Sony Pictures acquired the rights to Isaacson's biography in October 2011 and hired Aaron Sorkin to write the script. Sorkin spoke to Steve Wozniak , among others , who was hired by Sony as a consultant for the project while the script was being written.

After Sorkin had completed the script in January 2014, David Fincher was initially traded as a possible director for the project. In April 2014 Fincher left the project after contract disputes. Danny Boyle then directed it . Leonardo DiCaprio was planned for the main role, but he left the project shortly afterwards.

After Christian Bale also withdrew from the lead role, it was decided in favor of Michael Fassbender . However, Sony stopped the project completely shortly afterwards.

In November 2014 the project was taken over by Universal Pictures . Shortly thereafter, Jeff Daniels and Michael Stuhlbarg were cast. In December it was announced that Kate Winslet would also appear in Boyle's film.

Filming

Filming for Steve Jobs began on January 16, 2015 in Los Altos, California and continued in Berkeley , Cupertino and San Francisco . The final scenes were recorded on April 10, 2015 in the San Francisco Bay Area .

Cinematographer Alwin H. Kuchler selected for each of the three acts own footage: 16 mm film for the first act in 1984, 35 mm film for the second act in 1988 and high-resolution Alexa - digital cameras for the third act 1998th

Post production

On February 26, 2015 it was announced that the London-based company Union would implement the visual effects of the film.

Financial success

In the US, the film was not as successful as expected. In the first five weeks after the premiere, he brought in 16.7 million US dollars; on the first weekend it was seven million instead of the expected 15 to 19 million dollars. Because of the low level of audience interest, 2,000 cinemas withdrew the film after five weeks instead of the usual eight to ten weeks.

criticism

After showing at the Telluride Film Festival, the film received mostly positive reviews. In addition to the outstanding performance of Michael Fassbender, the critics also praised that of the supporting actors Seth Rogen, Michael Stuhlbarg and Kate Winslet. The latter would show one of the best performances of her career in Steve Jobs , according to Hitfix.com's Gregory Ellwood .

The majority of the reviews praised Aaron Sorkin's script, which on the one hand was "breathless, witty and cultivated" ("breathless, witty, urbane"), on the other hand, "exhausting". Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist called the film "a dazzling showcase of the brilliant, multi-layered" performance by Aaron Sorkin.

According to Perez, Daniel Pemberton's film music is “terrific and versatile”.

Daniel Sander judged in the Literatur- Spiegel that Steve Jobs was artificial, claustrophobic and often unnecessarily melodramatic , but he made "a god back into a person".

As "far most high-profile jobs-Ode" called Hanns-Georg Rodek the film in the world . Boyle and Sorkin painted "one of the greatest disgusts in film history in the most repulsive colors" for almost two hours - and then "they exculpate it in five minutes".

The film makes it clear that Steve Jobs was “not a particularly interesting man”, wrote Verena Lueken in the online edition of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and wanted a film about Steve Wozniak - or Joanna Hoffman, “the one in Steve Jobs' orchestra the first violin plays, and the second to it and also the kettledrum strikes ”.

At Rotten Tomatoes the film (as of September 8, 2015) received 92% positive ratings with an average rating of 7.4 out of 10 points.

Awards (selection)

From the German Film and Media Review was Steve Jobs with the predicate particularly valuable provided. The reasoning states: “With his film, Danny Boyle has succeeded in creating a complex and dense masterpiece that, like David Fincher's The Social Network, shows much more than just the biography of an IT pioneer. Instead of slavishly tracing the entire life of the Apple mastermind, the film is limited to three distinctive stations, three episodes, each of which takes place shortly before an important presentation. "

Kate Winslet was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2016 , Michael Fassbender received the nomination for Best Actor . Winslet won a Golden Globe Award , a British Academy Film Award and the London Critics' Circle Film Award for her performance . Aaron Sorkin received a Satellite Award and a Golden Globe for his script .
