history
Initially, the area was named Township No. 2 East of Union River , Livermore Survey (T2 EUR LS) or known as Plantation New Bristol . The Indian name for the area was Waukeag . This name of the Penobscot and Maliseet tribes referred to the Kame glacier formation , a hill made of gravel and sand that resembles a horse and forms on the bottom of slowly moving glaciers. Waukeag means "a horse in a place where the tide drains heavily".
The area was first settled in 1762 by Sullivan, Simpson, Bean, Gordon, Blaisdell and Card. The grant for the township was given to David Bean and others in 1761, through the Province of Massachusetts Bay . But this grant was not confirmed by the king. Confirmation came in 1803 by the state of Massachusetts after the settlers paid $ 5 each.
Sullivan was organized as a town on February 16, 1789. The name was chosen in honor of one of the early settlers, Daniel Sullivan. At Waukeag there are remains of an old French settlement. In 1841 a clay pot with old French coins was found. These were from 1725.
The town of Sullivan gave land to neighboring Hancock in 1828 and in 1895 the Sorrento peninsula was organized as an independent town.
In addition to fishing, a major economic factor in Sullivan was the granite industry.
