96 Hours - Taken 2 (Original title: Taken 2 ) is a film directed by Olivier Megaton from the year 2012 with Liam Neeson in the title role. The film continues the action film 96 Hours released in 2008 .

action

After Bryan Mill's campaign of revenge in the first part, the Albanian human traffickers are buried in their homeland of Tropoja . Murad, the father of one of the gangsters, swears vengeance on his son's grave. The traffickers learn Mills' identity through a corrupt Albanian official and after torturing French policeman Jean-Claude Pitrel.

Bryan's ex-wife Lenore is separating from her second husband. At Bryan's suggestion, Lenore and Kim visit him in Istanbul , where he worked as a sheikh's bodyguard for three days .

When Lenore and Bryan want to leave the hotel and drive into town, Murad's henchmen pursue them. Bryan notices her pursuers and tries to escape them by separating him and Lenore, but both are captured. Bryan calls Kim just before she is captured and tells her that they are being kidnapped. After a daring facade climb, Kim is able to escape to her hotel room and hide from her pursuers there.

After failing to reach his colleague Sam, Bryan calls Kim from a cellar dungeon with a small hidden cell phone. Since she does not want to go to the US embassy, but wants to help, Bryan gives her instructions to determine his own whereabouts with the help of some things from his suitcase and to bring him a weapon. This is where his kidnapper Murad shows up for the first time, who has Lenore brought in, injured her neck and hangs her over her head so that she bleeds to death in front of Bryan. He accuses him of killing his son, which Mills does not deny either. Murad announces that he will kidnap Mill's daughter and sell it as a sex slave in a pathetic brothel. When the kidnappers have left the room, Bryan frees himself, loosens Lenore from her shackles and calls Kim again, who is on the roofs over the city of Istanbul and uses a hand grenade to enable Bryan to determine his position. The explosion is also noticed by the kidnappers, who then pursue Kim. Bryan kills two kidnappers with the gun Kim brought him and saves Kim by shooting the last chaser. Bryan and Kim steal a taxi and drive back to their kidnappers' hiding place to free Lenore, who has already been taken away by the kidnappers. Bryan and Kim are followed on the way to the US embassy by the police and Murad's henchmen who can be eliminated by him. He calls Sam in the US, who makes sure that the embassy picks up Kim. However, on the drive to his dungeon, Bryan had paid attention to various things, such as road noise, and can thus retrace the path.

Bryan finds Murad's hiding place in which he is holding Lenore and kills his followers. He eventually finds the unarmed Murad and makes an offer to let him live if he refuses to retaliate. This apparently responds to why Bryan drops his gun, turns around and moves away. Murad grabs the unloaded gun and tries to shoot Bryan, whereupon he turns around and impales Murad on a coat hook. Lenore can be saved by Bryan. Back in the US, his daughter passes the driver's test and the family celebrates the rescue and driver's license with Kim's new boyfriend.

reception

The editors of the lexicon of international films mean: "The humor-free sequel lacks the pace and urgency of its predecessor, so that logical breaks and the unreflected glorification of violence stand out all the more clearly."

Dimitrios Athanassiou from MovieMaze.de writes: “After the high expectations that fueled the first part, the mood drops noticeably with the sequel. The scheme of the film is basically similar, but the cut, timing and a naivety of the twists, which even comes close to insulting the intellect, ruin a lot. Not to mention the almost ridiculous attempt to bring drama qualities into the story. Obviously, in this sequel everyone involved was mainly concerned with wringing out the cow completely. "

The prisma editors judge: “And again a great slaughter begins. After "96 Hours" Liam Neeson can again draw on the full and show the nasty Albanians where the hammer hangs. Despite devastating losses, they still want revenge. It goes without saying that the whole thing is not always logical and shows again racist tendencies, but for the most part it is still exciting. Even if you have already seen almost all scenes in a similar way [...], this adult film by Olivier Megaton [...] usually offers good action. "

Carsten Baumgardt von Filmstarts sums it up: “'96 Hours - Taken 2 'is a solid action thriller that looks more sophisticated due to the much higher budget than the original, but the glossy sequel lacks the rough charm and the infernal Power of the predecessor. "

Awards

Liam Neeson was nominated for the 2013 People's Choice Awards for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actor .

The film was also nominated for a Saturn Award in 2013 for best action or adventure film.

Sequels

Due to the great success, a third part was immediately planned. Liam Neeson initially expressed doubts about wanting to work in another film, but still played the lead role in 96 Hours - Taken 3 . In Germany, the sequel was published in December 2014, in most other countries in January 2015. As with the second part, Olivier Megaton took over the direction, the script is again by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen. In terms of content, Bryan Mills has to solve the murder of his wife, but - since he is suspected to be a murderer himself - he is hunted by the police officer Franck Dotzler , played by Forest Whitaker .
