U 104 was a German submarine from the Type IX B , which in World War II by the German navy was used.

history

The order for the boat was awarded to AG Weser in Bremen on May 24, 1938 . The keel was laid on November 10, 1939, the launch on May 25, 1940, the commissioning under Lieutenant Harald Jürst finally took place on August 19, 1940.

After its commissioning on August 19, 1940 to October 31, 1940, the boat was part of the 2nd U-Flotilla in Wilhelmshaven as a training boat . After training, it was a front boat in the 2nd U-Flotilla in Wilhelmshaven from November 1, 1940 until it was sunk on November 29, 1940.

First venture

The boat left Kiel on November 12, 1940 at 10 a.m. and was sunk on November 29, 1940. On this 17-day trip into the North Atlantic , the North Channel , Rockall Bank and Tory Island , a ship with 8,240 GRT was sunk and a ship with 10,516 GRT was damaged.

  • November 27, 1940: Damage to the British tanker Charles F. Meyer with 10,516 GRT. The tanker was damaged by a torpedo . He had petrol loaded and was on his way from Aruba to Avonmouth via Bermuda . He belonged to convoy HX-87 . He entered the Clyde on November 29, 1940.
  • November 27, 1940: sinking of the British steamer Diplomat ( Lage ) with 8,240 GRT. The steamer was sunk by a torpedo. He had loaded 4,481 tons of cotton , 2,760 tons of iron and steel and 1,603 tons of general cargo and was on the way from New Orleans via Bermuda to Liverpool . The ship was a straggler of convoy HX-88 with 53 ships. There were 14 dead and 40 survivors.

Whereabouts

The boat has been missing in the North Atlantic west of Malin Head (Ireland) since November 28, 1940 . The last report from the boat was received on November 27, 1940. On November 29, 1940, at 11:47 a.m., the boat was sighted by the British tanker Charles F. Meyer traveling in convoy HX-87. It was the convoy on which U 104 was operating at the time. The last known position was 55 ° 30 ′  N , 8 ° 0 ′  W in marine grid reference AM 5610. The boat probably ran into a mine on the British minefield SN 44 and sank. The minefield was laid on November 8, 1940 and was one of five anti-submarine fields that were laid between September 11, 1940 and November 13, 1940.
