History and etymology

Demolition of the castle ruins to obtain building material for new farmers , 1950

The name Uckro means something like wet village (Mockra) in Slavic and refers to the water-rich lowland in which the district is located. Slavs built a ring wall north of the district and can therefore be described as the first Uckro settlers. The first written mention comes from the year 1377 with the settlement by the Paserini family . At the end of the 14th, possibly also at the beginning of the 15th century, the parish built a stone church . In 1724 a manor was built outside the original area. A windmill, a sheep farm and a brick factory have survived from 1864. In 1928 the manor was combined with the community. The village experienced an economic boom when the owner of the manor, Ludwig von Uckro (until 1855 Ludwig Schlesinger), campaigned for a connection to the Berlin – Dresden railway line in 1875, creating the Luckau-Uckro station . In the course of the fighting in World War II , however, the castle burned to the ground in April 1945. In the 21st century, only a castle pond in the north of the district remained of the building. In October 1953 a German people's police officer was shot dead at the train station. More than 5,000 officers were looking for five suspicious Czechs who got off the train in Uckro while fleeing to West Berlin . Three reached their destination while two people were caught and sentenced to death in Czechoslovakia .
