history

The settlement Swanka was built in 1918 in connection with the expansion of the Petrograd  - Cherepovets  - Vologda line , which was opened in 1906 and from which the Murman Railway to Murmansk , which was built during the First World War , branches off in 1918. The construction of the hydropower plant in later years resulted in an influx of further settlers. Volkhov received city rights in 1933. 1933-1941 the city was temporarily Wolchowstroi (Волховстрой).

From 1941 the Red Army and the German Wehrmacht faced each other in this area . The Volkhov Front , established by the Russians in December of this year, was intended to defend the positions east of Leningrad and end the Leningrad blockade . The fighting lasted until February 1944, when the Wehrmacht had to withdraw.

economy

Volkhov hydropower plant

Volkhov is a railway junction and has a river port. A hydropower plant , aluminum processing , chemical and cement factories form the industrial base of the city. The Volkhov hydropower plant was put into operation in 1927 and was intended to supply energy to what was then Leningrad . With 80,000 PS installed power, a pipeline of 130 km and several substations , this plant was once the largest power plant and the largest power distribution system in the Soviet Union .

Agriculture dominates in the area, especially the cultivation of potatoes , wheat and vegetables , as well as cattle and pig farming.

Attractions

As a relatively young industrial city, Volkhov itself offers few attractions. In honor of one of the "fathers" of the hydropower plant, an engineer, a bronze statue was placed near the plant. There is a local museum in the village of Staraya Ladoga , 10 km away .

education

Volkhov has five branches of various St. Petersburg universities.
