The International Film Festival of Warsaw ( English Warsaw International Film Festival , Polish Warszawski Festiwal Międzynarodowy Filmowy ), also known as Warsaw Film Festival announced a ten-day international film event and is presented annually in early October since 1985 Warsaw held. It presents new films from around the world, from Europe and from Poland . Since 2009, the Warsaw International Film Festival has been one of the international festival competitions of FIAPF and thus one of the most important film festivals in the world, the A festivals .

Event history

The festival originated in 1985 as Warsaw Film Week (Polish: Warszawski Tydzień Filmowy ; English Warsaw Film Week ), organized by the Hybrydy Film Club , one of the oldest and most famous student clubs in Poland. Roman Gutek, the festival's creator, was also the festival director until 1990 and was replaced by Stefan Laudyn the following year. In 1991 the name was changed to Warsaw Film Festival (Polish Warszawski Festiwal Filmowy ), for whose organization the Warsaw Film Foundation (Warszawska Fundacja Filmowa) was established in 1995 . The foundation initiated and co-founded CentEast , an association of Central and Eastern European film festivals, in 2001 .

In 2000, the festival was accredited by FIAPF , an international interest group for film producers based in Paris, and changed its name again, this time to Warsaw International Film Festival (Polish Warszawski Międzynarodowy Festiwal Filmowy , WMFF for short ). In the course of internationalization, films from Germany have been presented since 2002 within a separate “German Panorama”.

The Warsaw Grand Prix has been awarded for the first time in international competition since 2005 . In the same year, representatives of FIPRESCI , an international association of film critics and film journalists, presented the FIPRESCI Award for the best film from the region of Central and Eastern Europe for the first time. Another award was added in 2008 when an audience award was dedicated exclusively to documentaries. The festival became increasingly popular, so that the number of cinema admissions almost tripled in just 13 years and in 2008 the 100,000 mark was only narrowly missed.

In 2009, FIAPF included the Warsaw International Film Festival in the group of A festivals , representing the most prestigious festivals in the world. In the same year, two feature films were awarded the audience prize because they achieved exactly the same number of points. In addition, for the first time the audience had the opportunity to choose the best short film.

Sections of the festival

The sections of the festival can be divided into two groups: the competitions, which, in addition to the audience award, are usually endowed with cash prizes, and the section for non-competing films.

  • In international competition , the Warsaw Grand Prix is associated with a prize of 100,000 zloty. This highest endowed prize has only been awarded since the 21st edition of the festival in 2005. There is also a Special Jury Award (Specjalna Nagroda Jury) , which is awarded with 20,000 zloty.
  • The Competition 1 and 2 for first and second films by directors from all over the world is endowed with 20,000 zloty.
  • The competition of the free spirit (Polish: Wolny Duch ; English Free Spirit ) is the independent, rebellious film from all over the world. The Free Spirit Award (Nagroda Wolny Duch) is endowed with 20,000 złoty.
  • In the competition for documentaries over 60 minutes, the best documentary receives 20,000 zloty.
  • In the competition for European short films under 45 minutes, the best of them will receive 10,000 PLN.
  • The audience award is the festival's oldest award. During the festival, the audience will rate the films after each screening. Although winning the Audience Award is not linked to a monetary bonus, it is an important indicator for film distributors. Traditionally, winning films are found by Polish distributors and are then shown in Polish cinemas across the country.
  • The FIPRESCI Award is given to the best first and second films by directors from Central and Eastern Europe and is represented at every festival section.

There are also non-competing sections:

  • The Master's Touch (Polish Mistrzowskie dotknięcie ; German for example: Touch of the Master) applies to new films by particularly well-known directors from all over the world.
  • Discoveries shows visions of the present world.
  • Films for children and parents are shown on the “weekend of cinema for the whole family”.
