Wir (original title Us ) is an American horror thriller by Jordan Peele , which premiered on March 8, 2019 as the opening film of the South by Southwest Film Festival . It was released in German cinemas on March 21, 2019, and in US cinemas the following day.

action

In 1986 little Ada Thomas visited an amusement park in Santa Cruz with her parents . When she is briefly unsupervised, she runs to the beach and discovers a mirror maze there . She goes in and meets another girl who looks just like herself. When she returns to her parents' house, she doesn't say a word anymore and looks like she has changed.

Around thirty years later, Ada found her language again and is married to Gabe Wilson. They drive with their children Zora and Jason to the holiday home where Ada spent the holidays of her childhood. Her husband has arranged to meet the Tylers, a couple of friends who are friends, on the beach in Santa Cruz, but Ada is reluctant to return to this place of her trauma. On the way there she notices a man with a sign that reads Jeremiah 11:11  EU . She had seen him thirty years ago before entering the cabinet of mirrors. In the evening she tells her husband that she wants to leave and tells him about the events of her childhood, which she suppressed all her life.

Suddenly a family of four in red overalls is standing in their driveway. The strangers force their way into the house. They are the Wilsons doubles . Ada's doppelganger can speak, the others only utter guttural sounds. The doppelganger says that they are shadows of the Wilsons. For years they would have waited for the day when they would break away from them. Then she puts each of her family members on the respective counterpart of the Wilson family. After a bloody fighting, the Wilsons are able to flee to the Tylers. But they, too, had been haunted by their doppelgangers and are now dead. All police emergency lines are busy, and they learn from television that there are people in red overalls everywhere in the area who seem to kill indiscriminately with scissors.

The family wants to flee to Mexico in the Tylers' car. The streets are lined with countless dead. On the beach in Santa Cruz, the red-clad doppelgangers have formed a long human chain and the road is blocked. Here they meet again with Ada's doppelganger and her son. She kidnaps Ada's son Jason in the mirror cabinet. Ada follows her into a huge underground facility.

When she finds the doppelganger, she learns from her that the buildings were built by people who cloned the bodies of all people, but not their souls. Therefore, humans have to share their souls with the clones. The clones should serve to control the people on the surface of the earth. But this plan failed and so the clones were left to their own devices and went crazy. She, who faced her in 1986 in the Cabinet of Mirrors, had for many years developed a plan to take over the world on the surface and to redeem those living under the earth. Ada manages to kill the doppelganger and save her son.

The Wilsons drive off in an ambulance and now Ada can slowly remember what happened to her as a child in the mirror cabinet: She herself was the clone who overpowered little Ada, dragged her into the underground facility and her place as the daughter of Thomas' had taken.

production

Staff and history of origin

Directed by Jordan Peele , who also wrote the script. In May 2018, the filmmaker announced the simple film title Us on social media .

Even before the US cinema premiere of his directorial debut Get Out , Peele had signaled that he had a general interest in a sequel to the film and said: “There are different directions we could take. But to be completely honest, I'm trying to implement completely different ideas. Get Out 2 has absolutely no priority at the moment. But if we get the chance to discuss a sequel, I'll be prepared. ”Beyond a possible sequel to Get Out , Peele had ideas for four other social thrillers. “I have four other social thrillers that I want to reveal in the next decade. The best and most fearsome monsters in the world are human beings and what we are capable of, especially when we meet. I've been working on these premises of these various social demons, these inherent monsters, the way they are woven into our thinking and our interaction. And every subsequent film should be about a different one of these social demons, ”said Peele.

Peele later stated that we are not a second get out . It was very important to him to put a black family at the center of a horror film , but it is not about the issue of racism, but about something that he believes has become an undeniable truth, and that is the simple fact that we are our own worst enemies. Monsters and stories about monsters, says Peele, are our best means of penetrating deeper truths and countering our fears as a society.

The film Get Out was a great financial success. Universal Pictures then offered him funding for his upcoming films. At Us , the available financial resources should be five times the budget of Get Out . Jason Blum will also produce Us . At the end of June 2018 it was announced that they had brought Kamil Oshundara on board , who worked on the storylines and character development.

Cast and filming

In May 2018, the casting of Elisabeth Moss , Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke became known. Nyong'o and Duke play Adelaide and Gabe Wilson. Evan Alex and Shahadi Wright-Joseph play their children Jason and Zora. While Adelaide's doppelganger imagines her own family with husband Abraham and the children of Pluto and Umbrae by name, it is itself (uncredited only with "Red" english , red ') performed according to the color of her overalls. The names of the Tylers' doppelgangers not mentioned in the film are also only listed in the credits. Madison Curry plays Adelaide as a girl. At the start of production at the end of July 2018, the other cast was also made public, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II , Anna Diop , Tim Heidecker and the twins Cali Sheldon and Noelle Sheldon . As announced in September 2018, Duke Nicholson , the grandson of Jack Nicholson , makes his feature film debut in the US .

Filming began at the end of July 2018 and took place in Santa Cruz , California, among other places . In the amusement park there on the promenade of the coastal city, the shooting of the horror film classic The Lost Boys by Joel Schumacher from 1987 had already taken place. Filming was completed on October 8, 2018. Mike Gioulakis acted as cameraman .

Film music and publication

The soundtrack is composed by Michael Abels , with whom Peele already worked for Get Out . Abels and Peele had spoken beforehand about the concept of duality and about things that could be placed next to each other in a context in which you normally cannot hear them together, Abels explained. In addition to strings and percussion, Abels also used an Eastern European instrument, the cimbalom, in his work . When experimenting with a violin paired, very dissimilar sounds collide. The result was the sound of Umbrea, Zora's evil doppelganger.

A 30-strong choir was also involved, a third of whom were children. Peele's motto was: “Take the innocent and put it in a context in which the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.” He and Peele used music several times in the film that sounds nice on its own, but in combination with what is on the The screen is shown not so much, so the film composer. In the first track, Anthem , you can hear a children's choir accompanied by percussion and a glockenspiel. The piece of music increases in intensity and should sound like “preparation for battle,” explained Abels. “The voices are not a language, they are nonsensical syllables, so you concentrate more on their feelings and the music. […] It was important that they didn't sound like any known culture. ” Abels had already included Sikiliza Kwa Wahenga for the film Get Out by Jordan Peele, a piece of music that the average viewer would not understand.

The original version of I Got 5 on It is the sixth track on the album and with it Club Nouveau's Why You Treat Me So Bad? that was sampled into the song . The last song on the album is I Got 5 on It in a remix to which orchestral sounds have been added to integrate it into Abel's score. The idea of using the song came naturally to Peele since his film is set in Northern California and I Got 5 on It was a hip-hop classic from the Bay area. For the piece Pas de Deux , which is included on the soundtrack towards the end , Abels used Tchaikovsky's Pas de deux from The Nutcracker from Pyotr Ilyich , which was the inspiration for the epic final battle in the film. Abels also embed I Got 5 on It , slowing down the familiar beat and adding violins, creating a crescendo of high-pitched, discordant sounds, according to Piya Sinha-Roy of Entertainment Weekly . The piece is assigned to Red, the doppelganger of Adelaide.

The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 35 pieces of music, was released for download on March 15, 2019 by Back Lot Music.

In December 2018, the movie poster and a first trailer were presented, which was backed by a remix version of I Got 5 on It . A first German trailer followed at the beginning of January 2019. At the beginning of February 2019, a second trailer was published as part of the Super Bowl. The film premiered on March 8, 2019 as the opening film of the South by Southwest Film Festival . It was released in German cinemas on March 21, 2019 and in US cinemas the following day.

reception

Age rating and film genre

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 16. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film strings together battle, murder and threat scenarios, especially in the second half. However, acts of violence are usually not shown; the victims are clearly visible in the picture, but not the killing processes. A brutal effect is therefore not to be feared with young people from the age of 16, especially since the violence is not glorified and the family always acts in self-defense. ”Apart from that, young people from the age of 16 are able to recognize the events as part of an unreal horror scenario and to maintain an appropriate distance, whereby the sometimes self-deprecating handling of the topic also contributes to relief and distancing.

Luca Bruno from SRF thinks that on the surface we are a slasher film , but in between he addresses the growing gap between rich and poor and offers so much material for discussion after the cinema visit. In a review by the dpa it is said that Jordan Peele once again proves to be a master of horror , but again and again loosen up the scenario with a skilful mixture of satire and laconic humor. In the end, the doppelgangers are not just a problem for the Wilsons, which shifts the film to a kind of zombie apocalypse and makes it seem less personal. Nevertheless , we are breathtakingly exciting .

Gross profit

In the USA, the film reached number 1 on the cinema charts after its start and advanced to the fourth most successful R-rated horror film there, with total revenues of 176 million US dollars, after Get Out at number 3, which was also directed by Jordan Peele. The production costs of US $ 20 million as of June 2020 are offset by worldwide income from screenings of US $ 255.2 million, which is just about the box office income of Get Out , which equates to the worldwide income of the first two films by Jordan Peele amount to more than half a billion US dollars. In Germany it has so far recorded 469,805 visitors.

Reviews and comparison with the predecessor

The film was rated positively by 93 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received 8 out of a possible 10 points (as of January 4, 2020). In addition, the film emerged as the winner of the 21st Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the Best Horror Movie 2019 category .

Peter Debruge of Variety wrote in his criticism, Jordan Peele explain in the film much about this mysterious doppelganger. Only in the last third of the film trying to explain his complicated master plan and are just as well thought out metaphor for it to show the range in our psyche, which is responsible for the impulses and the unconscious aspects of our thinking. Like the “sunken place” that Peele invented for Get Out , here he creates a visual allegory for the darker aspects of our own socialization, through which we are confronted with the monster that lurks within each of us.

Jochen Kürten writes at Focus.de , We do not have the subtle finesse of the previous film Get Out : “The pure horror scenes spread a lot of tension and horror effects, but when the credits are finished, one asks oneself about the meaning of it all.” The audience in the cinema too Frightening has been an old and tried and tested means of cinema since the days of the silent film, said Kürten, but Peele didn't add too much to that in Wir .

Dominik Kamalzadeh of DerStandard writes, We aim above all to shake the tender bourgeois self-confidence, and one inevitably has to think of Michael Haneke's Funny Games . For the countermeasures in question, Peele assigns the strong role with Lupita Nyong'o to the main female character, who not only has to conquer her fear, but herself, according to Kamalzadeh.

The film critic Antje Wessels explains that, above all, the idea of having both the protagonists and their respective doppelgangers embodied by one and the same actors contributes to the fact that We slowly paves its way into the subconscious of the audience. Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke and the two newcomers Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex acted completely differently depending on the character: “They become a kind of negative reflection of their counterpart, sometimes they don't talk at all, then again as if they were talking while they were talking - instead of exhaling, which is physically only possible for a few words in a row. They focus on the other self, prance around it and finally murder too - and that in We also much more bloody than it was in Get Out . ”There are no classic jumpscares here, but this is not necessary, according to Wessels further, because the creepy thing about us is ultimately primarily the thought about ourselves, how much evil is actually in us.

From the German Film and Media Review was We the predicate particularly valuable provided. There it says, as in his first film Get Out, Jordan Peele proves in Wir the impressive way in which he succeeds in combining horror, humor and social criticism in a perfidious mixture. The shock moments are staged effectively and the complex story leaves the viewer tense in the dark more than once. Up to the last surprising twist, Peele built his thriller like a puzzle and in the subtext of the story a lot of social discourses could be discovered with oppression, rebellion and the breaking of a civilizing mask.
