In October 2017, both artists announced the release date of Wolves through various social media .

Wolves is written in verse - chorus form, followed by a drop after the chorus . In terms of content, the song deals with the path that the lyrical self takes to achieve its great love . There was speculation in the media whether Gomez was also alluding to her illness Lupus ( German : "Wolf") with this song . This was neither denied nor confirmed by Gomez.

"I've been running through the jungle
I've been running with the wolves
To get to you, to get to you"

- Refrain, original excerpt

"I ran through the jungle
I ran with the wolves
To reach you, to reach you"

- Refrain, German translation

Reviews

Wolves was received positively by the critics. The editorial team of Bayern 3 describes the song as “a brilliant combination of sad melodic elements, but at the same time encouraging and motivating”. According to Laut.de "the song starts slowly, but picks up speed in the chorus and builds up to the part where Marshmello clearly has his finger in the game". Katrin Elsner from 1Live Wolves describes it in a similar way : “The song starts quietly, almost melancholy, climbs into a kind of intoxication and that's exactly where DJ Marshmello comes in. He delivers the EDM beats and makes the song ready for the dance floor ”. For Kat Bein from Billboard , the song is a "mix of emotions, from melancholy to hope."
