The 1984/85 season of the Vysschaya League was the 39th season of the highest Soviet ice hockey division . CSKA Moscow secured the Soviet league title for the 28th time , while Avtomobilist Sverdlovsk was relegated to the second division.

The twelve teams of the Wysschaja Liga first played in a common main round in a return game against each opponent, making the total number of games per team 22.

In the second phase of the season, the eight best teams in the main round played against each other again in a home and away game, with the results from the main round being adopted. The three best teams in the intermediate round qualified for the final round, in which they competed in the first and second leg, whereby the previous results were again adopted. The team with the highest points in the final round finally became champions. The teams that were fourth to eighth in the intermediate round met every opponent in a placement round for fourth place in four games. The previous results have also been adopted.

The four last placed in the main round met in a relegation round and also on the four best second division teams, where they completed a further 28 games, the results from the main round were taken over and the evaluation of the relegation round was carried out separately from the evaluation of the promotion round. The last of the relegation round finally rose directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
