ZDFkultur ( spelling zdf.kultur ) was a ZDF television channel that was created from the ZDFtheaterkanal and existed from 2011 to 2016 and part of the ZDFvision digital television program . Broadcasting began on May 7, 2011 and was discontinued on September 30, 2016 at midnight in favor of the radio online service. On February 13, 2019, ZDFkultur was revived as a digital offer in the ZDF media library. The cultural content of the channels ZDF, 3sat and arte are bundled under the brand .

history

On May 7, 2011, ZDFkultur replaced the ZDFtheaterkanal and broadcast a day-long program aimed at the target group of 20 to 40 year olds. In summer 2008 the plans for the conversion of the theater channel into the culture channel were presented.

On February 22, 2013 it was announced that ZDF director Thomas Bellut wants to discontinue ZDFkultur, at least “in its current form”. Only reruns should be broadcast as soon as possible until it is discontinued. On March 8, 2013, the broadcaster's television council approved the proposal by Artistic Director Thomas Bellut. On October 17, 2014, it was decided at the Prime Minister's Conference in Potsdam that the ZDF channel should be discontinued as well as EinsPlus from ARD.

While the interstate broadcasting treaty of April 1, 2015, did not mention the station's discontinuation, but its proper continued funding, the prime ministers of the federal states signed a new interstate broadcasting treaty in the first week of December 2015, which opened up more scope for the "young offer" in the online area. On August 15, 2016, the discontinuation of ZDFkultur was confirmed within a month and a half, ie for September 30 of that year. Instead, there has been funk on the Internet since October 1, 2016 , the “young offer from ARD and ZDF”.

program

overview

The program should cover the topics of music , performing arts , film culture , network culture and gaming at the start of the broadcast. The centerpiece was a six-hour program that was broadcast three times a day. The program planning ended on September 30, 2016.

Series, shows and magazines

Some of the ZDFtheaterkanal's program items were also taken over, such as: the BBC pop show Later with Jools Holland , the music magazine on Tape and the talk show TV Noir . In addition, there were self-produced concert series such as Berlin live, London live and the unplugged series zdf @ bauhaus . From 8 p.m., the pop culture format Der Marker shaped the station's image with changing moderators, including Rainer Maria Jilg and Nina Sonnenberg . From June 18, 2011, the station broadcast the festivals of Hurricane , Glastonbury , Roskilde and Wacken live in a cooperation . The current seasons of the conspiratorial kitchen concerts also ran from August 2011 on Fridays at 10 p.m. In 2012, the station broadcast the first season of the religious satire Gods Like Us , which resulted in a comparatively high audience.

During the day, older programs and series from the ZDF archive were repeated under the motto KULT , such as Dalli Dalli , ZDF Hitparade , disco , Starparade or Der Bastian , Forsthaus Falkenau , Hotel Paradies , our teacher Doktor Specht and Lukas . The evening program on Monday still offered enough space for repeats of show productions with a longer playing time, such as melodies for millions , music is in the air , Show Palast or special editions of the ZDF hit parade.

Feature films

The feature film program of ZDFkultur consisted of a series of German free TV premieres from the area of art house and independent films praised by film critics and the repetition of demanding film classics and cult films, which until then had often not been seen on free TV for decades had been. The German free TV premieres included Dogtooth (2009), Adams Äpfel (2005), Buffalo '66 (1998), Amer (2009), Jimmy P. - Psychotherapy of an Indian (2013), Excision (2012) by Richard Bates, Jr., or You and Me and Everyone We Know (2005) by Miranda July . The film classics shown again for the first time by ZDFkultur included B. Five Easy Pieces (1970), Walkabout (1971), Alice in the Cities (1974), Untitled Film (1948), Valerie - A Week of Miracles (1970), The Hour of the Wolf ( 1968), The Black Hole (1979), Dark Star (1974) or Zardoz (1974).

Retro presentation frame

The decision to send out a retro presentation frame as an artificial picture mask, "which should be reminiscent of a television from the 70s and 80s", caused harsh criticism from angry viewers in online forums and social media platforms; via petitions and letters of complaint, especially from owners of wide-screen TVs who did not achieve the desired effect. A spokesman for ZDF initially justified the retro presentation frame as “part of an overall design concept” by saying that “viewers wanted to simulate the viewing reality of TV sets at the time, which, in addition to the tube-related curvature, also had a relatively large image masking at the edges ( safe action area ) ". As of January 1, 2014, the framework was abolished again without official justification as part of the changeover to a pure loop and repetition program after almost three years of complaints that had not subsided.

reception

ZDFkultur could be received 24 hours a day via satellite and cable in the ZDFvision package. It was also distributed via IPTV and streaming services such as Zattoo .

ZDFkultur HD

ZDFkultur has been broadcast in HD 720p since April 30, 2012 . The program was initially only upscaled by 576i, since ZDFkultur did not have HD-capable broadcasting at the time. The program has been broadcast in native HD quality since mid-May 2015.
