history

Although there were a few ping-pong clubs in Vienna as early as 1921 and a championship for teams and individual players had been launched, it was not until 1923 that Edgar Dietrichstein founded the Vienna Table Tennis Association (WTTV) . The Vienna Table Tennis Association was transferred to the Austrian Table Tennis Association (ÖTTV) based in Vienna in 1930 .

Since there were club structures mainly in the Vienna area, the ÖTTV was practically the same as the WTTV.

In 1926 they participated in the founding of the ITTF and are thus one of the nine founding members of the world association.

From 1927, the number of clubs and active members in Austria grew continuously. They also played in the top of the world and won several world championship titles, for example Richard Bergmann , Alfred Liebster , Trude Pritzi and Gertrude Wildam .

The positive development ended in 1938 with the annexation of Austria to the German Reich . Jewish players and officials were excluded from the sporting business, which largely led to the decline of ÖTTV. In 1942 the Austrian Table Tennis Association was deleted as an association.

Reconstruction after the Second World War began as early as October 1945 , operated primarily by Anita and Heinrich Nitschmann, Kurt Kunodi, Konrad Neidhart, Robert Thum and Franz Linhart. The still existing personal union with the Vienna Table Tennis Association was ended with the establishment of the independent WTTV on June 4, 1947. In 1948 Axel Hohler published the first Austrian table tennis magazine, Österreichische Tischtennisrundschau . In 1957 the ÖTTV was one of the 17 founding members of the European Table Tennis Union ETTU .

In 1962, the state league was founded as the top division for men's teams. The following 12 teams started in the first season:

  1. Vienna Federal Railway
  2. Energie Wien
  3. Puch Graz
  4. Vienna Vienna
  5. Alpine Donawitz
  6. TSV Fulpmes (Tyrol)
  7. ASK Salzburg
  8. Baden AC
  9. Union Gmunden (Upper Austria)
  10. Chamber of Commerce Graz
  11. SV Semperit Traiskirchen
  12. Union Salzburg

In 1948 there were around 200 clubs and 5,000 active members in the ÖTTV, and in October 2002 there were 545 clubs with 26,553 players.

In September 2015, the ÖTTV men's team became European champions in the team competition at the 2015 European Table Tennis Championships in Yekaterinburg for the first time in ÖTTV history, ten years after winning the silver medal at the 2005 European Table Tennis Championships in Aarhus.

By 2015, ÖTTV won a total of 35 medals at European championships, including seven gold, ten silver and 18 bronze medals.

Magazines

From 1948 to 1949 Alexander Hohler gave the Austrian table tennis review . Due to financial difficulties with a circulation of no more than 1000 copies, he discontinued the magazine after 10 issues. From 1950, Hohler was the editor of the table tennis magazine published by the Austrian Table Tennis Association . In 1959 he ended his collaboration.

From 1964 onwards, the association for the promotion of TT sport in Austria in Vienna published the table tennis show on the initiative of Anton Luger . In the following years six issues appeared before the publication (before 1969) ceased.

Today the Austrian table tennis newspaper ÖTTZ informs the professional world.
