Starting position

The races in Nové Město na Moravě were the first after the World Championships , in which the Norwegians Johannes Thingnes Bø emerged as the most successful athletes in the men with six medals (including three gold medals) and Marte Olsbu Røiseland in the women with seven medals (five gold medals) were. The Norwegians were also in the lead in the overall medal table, who were able to provide the world champion or champions in half of the disciplines. In the competitions a good two weeks later in the Czech Republic, however, the most successful medal collector Røiseland did not start.

On March 2nd, three days before the start of the competitions, the IBU announced that spectators would be excluded from the competitions in the Vysočina Arena. The reason for this decision is a decision by the National Security Council of the Czech Republic to prevent the possible spread of the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus after the first infected people in the Czech Republic the day before. The organizers expected around 100,000 spectators to attend the competitions. In order to ensure the health of the athletes, there were additional protective measures, such as a minimum distance in the mixed zone of 1.5 meters or additional disinfectants. The otherwise obligatory press conferences were also dispensed with this time.

Another victory for Johannes Thingnes Bø in the sprint in Nové Město. For the eighth time this season, the Norwegian was at the top of the podium. Quentin Fillon Maillet and, already over a minute behind, Bø's brother Tarjei landed on the other places. The world champion Alexander Loginow landed beyond the best 60 and was only 65 in the end. The German biathlon men also disappointed, with Johannes Kühn the best crossed the finish line in 11th place. However, the race was more positive for Tero Seppälä, for example. The Finn finished in the top 20 for the first time in his career after shooting faultlessly. Italy's best athlete Tommaso Giacomel was also able to finish in the top 30 in his very first World Cup race as 27th and was thus the first in his country. For the Austrians this was Felix Leitner (19th) and for the team from Switzerland Jeremy Finello (25th).

Denise Herrmann celebrated her second success this season. With the low starting number three, the 31-year-old crossed the finish line first and then had to wait for the competition. But neither the French Bescond, who shot clean, nor the local hero Davidová could endanger Herrmann's victory. In the subsequent interview, the German said about the "ghost race" on ZDF: "At the shooting range it was certainly not a disadvantage to be able to focus on doing your thing." In the fight for the overall World Cup, Tiril Eckhoff (5th) and Hanna Öberg (6th) make up a few points on Dorothea Wierer, who is in the lead, who did not get past 24th place. As best Austrian was Lisa Hauser in 15th place, the best Swiss Aita Gasparin performed ranked 30th

The last relay race of the season was again won by the relay from Norway. With their fourth success in the sixth race, the team around the final runner and superstar Johannes Thingnes Bø was able to win the relay world cup for the Scandinavians for the third time in a row. The French, who became world champions in Antholz, only landed 15th. The second runner Émilien Jacquelin only fired two after-landing shots and then ran into the penalty loop, although he actually still had a cartridge available. This led to a two-minute penalty, without this faux pas the team would have finished 8th, but they were still able to achieve second place in the relay world cup. The Ukrainian team was able to run on the podium for the first time since the 2011 World Championships. The Swedish team completed the podium in third place. The teams from Italy (6th), Switzerland (9th) and Austria (10th) also made it into the top 10.

After a Norwegian had won Tiril Eckhoff in the women's competition in the morning, Johannes Thingnes Bø was able to imitate his compatriot just two hours later. Despite three mistakes on the shooting range, the Norwegian prevailed over the faultless Émilien Jacquelin. As in the women's race, a German participant also reached the podium. For Arnd Peiffer, one mistake in the final standing stage was enough for bronze. This race was again generally dominated by the Norwegian team, which placed five among the top ten athletes, even if Bjøntegaard, Dale and Christiansen could not get past Peiffer and Pidrutschnyj on the final lap. The two Austrians Simon Eder and Felix Leitner finished in positions 22 and 23. An athlete from Switzerland could not qualify for the last competition in Nové Město.

With Tiril Eckhoff's seventh win of the season, an exciting race developed, especially behind them. Franziska Preuss, who came seventh to the last shooting, was the only athlete in her group to shoot without mistakes and left the shooting range in third behind Eckhoff and the Swede Öberg. Preuss defended her position to the finish and achieved her best result of the season. The best athlete from Austria was Lisa Hauser , who crossed the finish line in 15th place. Lena Häcki was the only Swiss woman to start at the end of 22nd with five errors in the shooting.

    Effects

    To the overall World Cup

Johannes Thingnes Bø was able to further reduce the gap in the overall World Cup. Since the Norwegian took a "baby break" in January, he has continuously narrowed the gap to the leading Martin Fourcade, whom he is now trying to catch up in second place. Together with Quentin Fillon Maillet, a trio had already left. The first three were a good 100 points ahead of their pursuers. The dominance of Norwegians and French was also evident in the overall World Cup, in which the first seven athletes continued to come from these nations.

Dorothea Wierer continued to lead the women. The first pursuer was again Tiril Eckhoff, who had fallen back to third place in the overall World Cup after a weak World Championship. This was again occupied by Hanna Öberg, who temporarily overtook Eckhoff after the World Championships. Since Marte Olsbu Røiseland did not start in Nové Město, Denise Herrmann was able to overtake the Norwegian after her victory in the sprint.

The changes in the table relate to the World Championships, the results of which also apply to the World Cup ranking:

    On the discipline scores

Since the last competitions of the season in Oslo were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the last mass start of the season took place in Nové Město. Johannes Thingnes Bø, who won four of the five mass start races, won the men's small crystal ball. Second was Quentin Fillon Maillet, who won one race. In the women’s category, Dorothea Wierer was able to win the small crystal ball in the mass start category, although she could not win any of the five races.

At the relay world cups, the teams from Norway were the most successful, both for women and for men, and they were able to win most of the races.
