Altstadt is a district of Magdeburg that includes residential areas, trade and the Saxony-Anhalt government district. 16,098 inhabitants live in an area of 3.769 km² (as of December 31, 2016).
geography
The Altstadt district is located in the center of Magdeburg . It is bounded in the north by Walther-Rathenau-Strasse ( B1 ), in the west by the railway systems and old fortifications (glacis), in the south by Steuben-Allee and Erich-Weinert-Strasse and in the east by the Stromelbe. Neighboring districts are the Alte Neustadt (north), Stadtfeld Ost (west), Leipziger Straße (south-west), Buckau (south-east) and on the other side of the Elbe Werder (east). The old town can be roughly divided into north and south, with both parts being separated from Ernst-Reuter-Allee in an east-west direction. The Breite Weg runs through the old town in a north-south direction.
Infrastructure
Today, the old town is dominated by prefabricated buildings and commercial buildings in the northern part, with shopping centers and public facilities in the middle. In the southern part of the old town from Domplatz to Steuben-Allee there is a large old building district with Wilhelminian-style houses and Baroque style. Hegelstrasse and Hasselbachplatz are particularly outstanding here . In addition, the government district with the state chancellery , state parliament and parliamentary group offices is located on Domplatz. The Green Citadel of Magdeburg can also be found on Domplatz , the last large Hundertwasser House, which was inaugurated in autumn 2005.
All nine Magdeburg tram lines (during the day) and all five night lines run either in north-south or east-west direction through the old town, as do most of the bus routes. From the Magdeburger Ring , the so-called "Tangente" ( B71 ), five exits lead to the center. The old town area has five major traffic arteries: two in east-west direction and three in north-south: in the middle runs from north to south the Breite Weg , which is a pedestrian zone in the north. To the west of Breite Weg, Otto-von-Guericke-Straße also runs from north to south. Both streets start at Universitätsplatz and lead to Hasselbachplatz . The Schleinufer runs parallel to the east on the banks of the Elbe, which greatly relieves the center of traffic. Ernst-Reuter-Allee, which divides the old town into north and south, runs in an east-west direction. Walther-Rathenau-Straße ( B1 ) borders the old town on the northern edge .
economy
The inner city of Magdeburg is characterized by three large shopping centers: the Allee-Center , the City-Carree and the Ulrichshaus . Despite the large shopping centers in the outskirts, on the outskirts and the motorway, the old town has become a significant attraction for shopping. The revitalization of the Breite Weg as a formerly important boulevard and shopping street has made progress since 2000, but this was largely thwarted by the expansion of the Allee Center with a third floor. From Universitätsplatz to Hasselbachplatz , however, a wide variety of shops and department stores stretch over around 2.2 kilometers, with a certain amount of vacancy, especially in the vicinity of Universitätsplatz.
Culture
The old town offers a wide range of cultural facilities. The Magdeburg Theater is present both with the Opera House on Universitätsplatz and the Schauspielhaus on Friedensplatz. The well-known political cabaret " Zwickmühle " is located on Leiterstrasse . To the Hasselbachplatz around has since 2000 developed a diverse and large pub and bar scene that attracts nationwide audience. Meanwhile, the central area around the Domplatz with the Magdeburg Hundertwasser House, the Green Citadel and a small business and office complex is also coming to life. In addition, the old main post office opposite the cathedral was converted into the Magdeburg Justice Center in 2007 . One of the city's two large cinema complexes is located at Willy-Brandt-Platz ( main station ). The barracks Mark in the north of the district serves as a meeting center for many cultural events.
Various parks and park-like facilities give the old town a green face: Hegelpark, Fürstenwall , Klosterbergegarten (actually outside the old town, but is part of the infrastructure), the park on Schellingstraße, the Glacis and the Kunen (old city walls to the west at the main train station ), Garden of the Möllenvogtei , Hohepfortewall and Petriförder. At the Hohepfortewall, the Mark fortress , formerly the northern defensive fortress of the city in the 19th century , is being expanded into a cultural center.
