The Ateneo de Manila University (also Ateneo de Manila or Ateneo for short ) is a Jesuit- run private university in the Philippines . It was founded in 1859 and started out as a state-funded school. It became a private school during the American occupation. It achieved university status in 1959.
The East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI) is affiliated with the Ateneo .
Well-known university graduates are José Rizal , Felipe Agoncillo , Epifanio de los Santos , Pedro Paterno , Pedro Pelaez , Patricio G. Mariano and Valentim Ximenes .
