Auguste Sallé (1820-1896)
Birth note

Auguste Sallé (born October 21, 1820 in Paris ; † May 5, 1896 in rue Guy de la Brosse 13 in the 5th arrondissement ) was a French naturalist and explorer . His main research focus was entomology , but he was also interested in ornithology and malacology .

Live and act

Although Sallé was a highly qualified researcher and taxidermist, he never benefited from a scientifically sponsored assignment. He financed all of his trips himself. In February 1831, at the tender age of eleven, he broke up with a Mr. Vasselet and his mother Catherine Sallé nee. Caillard on his first trip to Mexico. He later dedicated Ornismia Catharinae to his mother , a name that is now considered a synonym for a subspecies of the dwarf fishes called ( Mellisuga minima vielloti ) ( Shaw , 1812). Many of the insects collected on this trip were described by his godfather Louis Alexandre Auguste Chevrolat (1799–1884) in his work Coléoptères du Mexique . At least until 1835 they visited the Mexican states of Veracruz , Puebla and Tlaxcala . After his stay in Mexico he moved on to New Orleans , where he also collected. He sent the harvest of 5,200 Beetles to Chevrolat, who put them up for sale in 1839.

He visited and collected on the island of Saint-Domingue , in Mexico, particularly in the states of Veracruz, Oaxaca , Puebla and Tlaxcala, in Cuba and part of the Bahamas , as well as other parts of Central America.

Between 1846 and 1848 Sallé embarked on a second research trip to Central America. Here he collected, for example, on the Río Dulce in Guatemala. During this time he also stayed in Caracas . Here he studied the insects of Venezuela with Marco Aurelio Roja (1831–1866) . In Venezuela he collected in different areas. He sent the collected bird hides to Paris. After their arrival in Europe, they were described by Gustav Hartlaub (1814–1900), Charles Lucien Jules Laurent Bonaparte (1803–1857), Frédéric de Lafresnaye (1783–1861) and Philip Lutley Sclater (1829–1913).

He set out on June 8, 1849 to travel to Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic . Here he made Santo Domingo his headquarters. It was the place from which he set out on nine research trips. During the first trip he visited the provinces of Baní and Azua . On his second excursion he explored the province of San Cristóbal . His third excursion took him through the provinces of Baní, Azua, San Juan and the Sierra de Neiba . Here he explored the area around Lake Enriquillo and the Cerro de Sal salt mountain . After being in the fertile Cibao Valley in La Vega Province , he returned via Barahona Province . His fourth excursion was again to the province of San Cristóbal. This was followed by a trip via Cotuí , the capital of the province of Sánchez Ramírez , to the provinces of La Vega to Moca in the province of Espaillat, further on via the provinces of Santiago , the Sabana de Pontón in the province of Duarte , Río Yaque del Norte in the province of Monte Cristi to Puerto Plata . The sixth excursion took him over the Sabana Grande in the province of San Cristóbal, the cities of El Seibo and Higüey , as well as Cape Macao , Cape Espada and Cape Engagno in the far east of the island. This was followed by the seventh trip to the provinces of San Cristóbal, Azua and Sierra de Neiba. When he left for Cotuí, his research focus was on botany. Finally, on his ninth and final excursion, he again traveled through the province of San Cristóbal. On July 8, 1851, he embarked to return to Europe.

In the course of 1854 Mexico again became the destination of his journey. His yield was plentiful until his return in 1856. During this time he mainly roamed the state of Oaxaca , but Veracruz and Puebla were also part of his exploratory trips. On this trip he was repeatedly with other well-known collectors and naturalists such as Adolphe Boucard (1839–1905) and François Sumichrast (1829–1882). Many of the birds were collected by Philip Lutley Sclater (1829-1913) in his articles Catalog of the Birds collected by M. Auguste Sallé in Southern Mexico, with descriptions of new species , On Parus meridionalis and some other species mentioned in the Catalog of Birds collected by M. Salle in Southern Mexico , List of additional species of Mexican Birds, obtained by by M. Auguste Sallé from the environs of Jalapa and S. Andres Tuxtla , On a collection of birds received by M. Sallé from Southern Mexico , On a collection of birds received by M. Sallé from Oaxaca Southern Mexico or On a collection of birds received by M. Sallé from Oaxaca Southern Mexico . His malocological exhibits ended up in the collection of Hugh Cuming (1791–1865) and were published by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer (1805–1877) in his articles Description of Forty-seven new species of Helicea, from the collection of H. Cuming , Description of a new Genus and Twenty-three new species of Pneumonopoma, from the collection of H. Cuming , Description of twenty-seven new species of Land-Shells, collected by M. Salé in the State of Vera Cruz, Mexico , Description of Thirty- three new species of Land-Shells, from the collection of H. Cuming and description of new helices .

In 1862, together with François Charles Émile Fauqueux-Parzudaki (1829–1899), he published a bird catalog from his Mexican collection. This was published under the title Catalog des oiseaux du Mexique composant les collections de MA Sallé . He gave 13 rue Guy-de-la-Brosse as the address . In his review of the catalog, Gustav Hartlaub (1814–1900) wrote:

“Contains no fewer than 432 species and is of great importance as a contribution to geographical zoology. Sallé is one of the most capable collectors and the beauty and cleanliness of the hides he has prepared really leave little to be desired. "

Its malacological yield was u. a. analyzed by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer (1805–1877), Robert James Shuttleworth (1810–1874), Wilhelm Bernhard Rudolph Hadrian Dunker (1809–1885), Lovell Augustus Reeve (1814–1865) and Joseph Charles Hippolyte Crosse (1826–1898) and published.

During the siege of Paris he is said to have taken the collection of Maximilien de Chaudoir (1816-1881) into his care.

In 1880 Charles Barney Cory (1857–1921) visited Europe to get new natural history material. During his flying visit to France he visited a. a. Sallé and Adolphe Boucard, who had settled in Paris as natural food dealers. Around 1880 Osbert Salvin (1835–1898) and Frederick DuCane Godman (1843–1819) bought Sallé's extensive insect collection. It was the basis for many species, which under their leadership in the work Biologia Centrali-Americana by authors such as Martin Jacoby (1842–1907), Henry Walter Bates (1825–1892), David Sharp (1840–1922), Henry Stephen Gorham ( 1839-1920), Joseph Sugar Baly (1816-1890), and George Charles Champion (1851-1927) were first described for science.

Sallé died after a long illness in his residence at 13, Rue Guy de la Brosse in Paris. After his death, his book holdings were auctioned off. Henri Deyrolle (1827–1902) supplied the catalog for the auction . The auction lasted from February 18-27, 1897.

Memberships

Dedication by Mulsant in Histoire naturelle des oiseaux-mouches ou colibris constituant la famille des trochilidés

In 1841 he introduced Victor Debouchel (1820–1864) of the Société Cuvierienne as a new member. He himself never seemed to have joined the company. In 1852 he became a member of the Société entomologique de France . At that time he lived on Rue Fontaine-Saint-Georges, 12 . In 1875 he became a Fellow of the Entomological Society of London . This was followed in 1888 by the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia being elected a corresponding member. He was also a member of the Société de Géographie , corresponding member of the Zoological Society of London , the Sociedad Mexicana de Historia Natural , Varaguasia de Caracas etc.
