The tournaments

Olympia 1996 in Atlanta

For the Games in 1996 also had Melbourne advertised, but was failed in the vote already in the third round. The Australians were then not qualified for the first Olympic women's football tournament because they were eliminated in the preliminary round at the 1995 World Cup .

Olympia 2000 in Sydney

At the second Olympic tournament, Australia benefited from the fact that it was automatically qualified as host, because at the World Cup in 1999 , where the other participants qualified, they were eliminated again in the preliminary round. But they could not use the home advantage. In their first Olympic game they lost against Germany 3-0. Against Sweden it was 1-1, with Cheryl Salisbury scoring the first goal for the Australians. With a 1: 2 against Brazil they missed the knockout round.

Olympia 2004 in Athens

For the third Olympic women's football tournament, the continental federations had been allocated starting places and Australia qualified as winners of the oceanic qualifying tournament, which was held in Fiji in March 2004 . In doing so, they benefited a. from New Zealand's retreat. So they only had two games to play, which they won 10-0 against Papua New Guinea and 7-0 against Fiji .

In the only group of four at the Olympic tournament, they lost their opening game against Brazil 1-0, then won 1-0 against hosts Greece and thus for the first time a game at the Olympic Games. In the last game a 1-1 draw against the eventual Olympic champion USA . As one of the two best thirds in the group, they had reached the first quarter-finals, in which they met Sweden and lost 2-1.

2008 Olympics in Beijing

For the tournament in Beijing , the Australians had to deal with stronger teams in qualifying after Australia switched to the Asian association . In the first round they still had easy opponents and won a tournament in the Republic of China (Taiwan) 2-0 against Myanmar , 10-0 against Uzbekistan and 8-1 against the Republic of China (Taiwan) . In the final tournament, they had to play against Hong Kong , North Korea and again the Republic of China (Taiwan) in two-legged matches in a game against everyone. Australia lost both games against North Korea with 0: 2, there were four big wins, u. a. a 15: 0 against Hong Kong wasted.

Olympia 2012 in London

Four years later they were directly qualified for the final Asian qualification tournament in the People's Republic of China , but lost to world champions Japan and North Korea and could only win against hosts China, South Korea and Thailand. As a third party, they missed the Olympic Games.

Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro

The two best teams qualified for the tournament in Rio de Janeiro at a tournament in Osaka . Opponents at the tournament that started on February 29, 2016 were Japan, PR China , North Korea, South Korea and Vietnam . Australia started the tournament with a 3-1 win against hosts Japan. After winning the three following games, participation in the Olympics was already certain on the penultimate match day. With a 1-1 draw in their last game against the People's Republic of China, the Australians won the tournament and improved to fifth in the FIFA world rankings , their best position so far. Because of this, the Australians were placed in Pot 2 for the group draw together with France and Sweden . Since the two European teams could not be drawn into the group with Germany , which was placed in pot 1 together with hosts Brazil and world champions USA , it was already clear before the draw that the Australians would meet Germany. Canada and Zimbabwe, which had not been played before, were drawn as other opponents. At the age of 16, the Australian Ellie Carpenter was the youngest participant in the tournament, but was not used. In their first game against Canada, the Australians lost 2-0 despite being outnumbered by 70 minutes, and conceded the first goal in the first minute. Against Germany, on the other hand, they were able to take the lead after six minutes and increase it just before the half-time break. In stoppage time of the first half they then conceded the next goal and in the 89th minute the goal to equalize 2-2. They led 6-0 against Zimbabwe until the 90th minute, but then had to accept the Africans' consolation goal. Since Germany only lost 2-1 to Canada and had also won 6-1 against Zimbabwe, both teams were tied, but the Australians had a goal difference that was one goal worse and were third. As the best third in the group, they were also qualified for the quarter-finals, where they met the hosts. After a goalless 120 minutes there was a penalty shoot-out . Here the Brazilian record goal scorer Marta was the first player to miss , but Katrina Gorry then missed Alanna Kennedy as the last player , so that Australia was eliminated.

Olympia 2020 in Tokyo

For the tournament in Japan, the Australians had to qualify in the last two rounds of the Asian qualification. The penultimate round was originally supposed to take place in February 2020 in the Chinese city of Wuhan . Due to the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 , they were initially relocated by the AFC to Nanjing on January 22, 2020 and, after further spread, to Sydney on January 26. With wins against Chinese Taipei (7: 0) and Thailand (6: 0) as well as a 1-1 draw against China due to the more goals scored, Australia qualified for the final round as group winners. In this they met Vietnam in the return leg . After a 5-0 home win, the away game was won 2-1 and the Olympic ticket was booked. In preparation for the tournament, the Australians wanted to play in the USA against world champions USA and in Canada against the Olympic third from 2016 in April , but the games were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
