The Lübeck – Hamburg railway line is one of the most important main railway lines in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg . It connects the two Hanseatic cities and is occasionally seen as part of the international bird airline.

Route description

From Lübeck, the route runs southwest through mostly agricultural, slightly undulating plains. The Trave is crossed three times. The most important stopover is Bad Oldesloe , from where there are hourly connections to Bad Segeberg and Neumünster with the nordbahn railway company . Between Ahrensburg and Hamburg-Rahlstedt, the route runs along the Stellmoor tunnel valley . In the city of Hamburg, after crossing the goods bypass path parallel to the train of the -distance Hamburg Main achieved from the east.

history

The construction of a railway line between Lübeck and Hamburg was discussed as early as 1831. But first there was the refusal of the Duchy of Holstein reigning Danish authorities for the construction of the railway line Lübeck-Büchen by the Lübeck-Büchen Railway Company (LBE). Lübeck was connected to the Berlin-Hamburg railway , but trains to Hamburg had to accept the 32 kilometer long route via Büchen . The direct connection from Lübeck to Hamburg was only opened by LBE on August 1st, 1865. The double-track expansion became necessary after just a few years due to the rapid increase in traffic and could be fully completed by 1878. The railway line ended in Hamburg initially at Lübeck train station in the Hammerbrook district . After the completion of Hamburg Central Station in 1906, the tracks of the Lübeck Railway were led to the new Central Station together with those of the Berlin Railway . Walther Brecht , chairman of the LBE at the time, received the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd class for his redesign of the LBE railway facilities on the occasion of the opening of the station and the Royal Crown Order 2nd class at the Coronation and Order Festival on January 18, 1907 .

In 1963 the Lübeck – Puttgarden and Rødby Havn – Copenhagen lines were expanded to become a bird flight line . This increased the range of long-distance trains between Lübeck and Hamburg. In addition to the trains to Copenhagen, there were interzonal trains in the direction of Rostock . The D trains , the TEE Merkur and the TEEM freight trains in the direction of Puttgarden were hauled by diesel locomotives of the 221 series , later the 218 series.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the express trains were hauled by class 220 diesel locomotives in push-pull operation . As a special feature, these trains carried double-deck coaches from the former LBE up to 1977 in addition to express train coaches of type yl . At that time, the Lübeck – Hamburg line was the only line operated by the Deutsche Bundesbahn on which double-deck cars were used.

Regional trains in the Hamburg – Bad Oldesloe section were last operated until December 2008 with modernized n-cars (Silberlingen) or double-deck cars with class 218 diesel locomotives or class 628 railcars .

The Lübeck-Travemünde- Lübeck and Lübeck-Hamburg railway lines were electrified in 2008. For this purpose, the decentralized traction current converter plant Lübeck-Genin was built for 14 million euros, which supplies the railway line Lübeck-Hamburg with single-phase alternating current of 15 kV 16.7 Hertz. With the timetable change in December 2008, train operations with electric locomotives began. Since then, an ICE from / to Munich has also been linked via Hamburg to Lübeck.

Long-distance rail traffic between Hamburg, Lübeck and Copenhagen, which has been significantly reduced since the construction of the Great Belt Bridge between Funen and Zealand , was operated from December 2007 to December 2016 with Intercity Express trains from DB and EuroCity trains from Danske Statsbaner . These trains were driven with diesel ICE of the German class 605 and Danish MF sets. From December 2017, the EC services were served exclusively by Danish sets. Since December 2019, this line is no longer served due to the construction of the Fehmarnbelt link between Germany and Denmark.

business

Regional Express trains run every half hour between Lübeck Hauptbahnhof and Hamburg Hauptbahnhof from Monday to Friday , and every hour on weekends. This section has the largest number of rail travelers in Schleswig-Holstein.

The RE8 regional express trains only stop in Reinfeld (Holst) and Bad Oldesloe, while the half-hourly compressor on the RE80 line also stops in Ahrensburg. On the section Hamburg Hbf - Ahrensburg - Bad Oldesloe there are also regional trains of the line RB81, which also stop at the other stations, each hour Hamburg-Bad Oldesloe and Hamburg-Ahrensburg, this line is in the traffic peaks by trains Hamburg-Ahrensburg and Hamburg – Bargteheide added.

During the rush hour in the morning and in the afternoon, some Regional Express trains run as line RE83 or RE84, which are connected in Lübeck Hbf to and from Kiel Hbf via Eutin and Preetz. These trains usually consist of 4-5 double-decker cars with a class 218 locomotive and a class 112 locomotive, which, however, run without a drive. The reason for this is the transfer of trains from the RB81 to the plant at Kiel Hbf. The Regional Express trains, consisting of a class 112 locomotive and 6-7 double-decker cars, are transferred as RE70s via Neumünster to Kiel Hbf. However, this only happens at the edge of the day.

From 2009 the Ahrensburg-Gartenholz stop was built between Ahrensburg and Bargteheide. However, the opening of the station at the 2009 timetable change failed due to legal issues and was completed on December 12, 2010 with a one-year delay.

future

The Jenfelder Straße level crossing, open spaces for additional tracks can be seen.

The Hamburg – Bad Oldesloe section is to be expanded in the future for S-Bahn operations with new stops at Wandsbek Rathaus , Bovestraße , Holstenhofweg , Pulverhof and Ahrensburg West (with a transition to the underground ). By November 2019, the two level crossings on Hammer Strasse in Marienthal (Lübeck-Hamburg line and the track of the freight bypass line to Hamburg-Billbrook that branches off 350 meters to the east and crosses Hammer Strasse 70 meters further south ) were replaced by underpasses, as well as the 3rd Kilometers to the east of the Jenfelder Straße level crossing completely abandoned, which is seen as a prerequisite for the expansion of the S-Bahn.

The Hamburg-Wandsbek regional train station is to be abandoned as a passenger train stop as part of the construction of the parallel S-Bahn line S4 to Ahrensburg and replaced by the two new stops Wandsbek Rathaus and Bovestrasse at a distance of 620 meters in front of and behind the old train station.
