Reviews

In 2001 the art historian Michael Stoeber wrote about Bernhard Kock:

“[Kock] loves the adventure of a new beginning, prefers to navigate in unknown waters rather than in well-worn tracks. At the beginning of the nineties he painted impressive pictures with red lead on nettle, which position themselves impressively between informal , color field painting and color semantics . The works are full of tension, but restrained dynamism. In most of the pictures in the series ("AM" and "SM" series) the color bursts the form with explosive force. It seems as if in these works Kock wanted to compensate for the monochrome restraint of the Mennige works with the expressive thunderstorms of color of an unleashed oil painting. "

On the occasion of an exhibition by the Kestner Society in the Marktkirche in Hanover, Stoeber wrote in 2009:

“Bernhard Kock presents a series of masterfully painted oil paintings that show portraits of people in the manner of a blurred, black and white photograph. With this trick he impressively moves the both mortal and spiritual of human existence before the eyes of the beholder. "

On the occasion of Kock's retrospective in the Evangelical Academy Loccum from November 2009 to January 2010, the art historian and scholar Frank-Thorsten Moll wrote :

“These pictures are disturbing because they seem to hide the realistic portrait behind streaks and thus do not depict any people - they manifest themselves at best as the shadows of real people on the screen, almost as if a ghost had left its marks on a film. It could be fleeting ghost images if the blurred fleetingness were not opposed by a precise painting style that is anything but casual. On the contrary; With the help of rulers and the finest brushes, the painter draws exact traces in the impasto paint and in a process that can almost be described as sculptural, exposes the motifs behind the previously applied mountain of material. "

In 2011, the cultural journalist Johanna Di Blasi wrote on the occasion of Kock's retrospective in the Haus der Region Hannover under the title Im Netz der Stadt :

“Kock's pictures aim to draw the viewer's gaze into graphic particle thunderstorms, to hypnotize one with opulent tableaus of colored structures ...

The contemporary aspect of
his art consists in the fact that his abstract painting sometimes reaches a level of complexity that can actually be achieved with computer graphics connects. Formal approaches have been making a comeback in art for several years. Bernhard Kock makes a remarkable contribution in this field with his painting. "

On the occasion of the joint exhibition "masked" with pictures and sculptures by Constanze Prelle, Bernhard Kock, Frank Rosenthal and Reinhard Stoppe at the Künstlerhaus association in Göttinger Lichtenberghaus , the art critic Michael Stoeber wrote in 2015 in the Göttinger Tageblatt :

“Kock's works are one thing above all else: very colorful. They have neon-colored grids reminiscent of large pixels. The regularities in his compositions are also interrupted by fine lines, structures and patterns. Complementary colors often border each other here. The paintings appear wild and powerful. The lines seem to dance, which suddenly result in large constructs with a little distance from the picture. "
