The 2nd Biathlon World Championship was held in 1959 in the Italian winter sports resort of Courmayeur . The following year there were no biathlon world championships because of the Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley .

Relay 3 × 7.5 km (unofficial)

For the first time a real relay was held. There are now three runners over 7.5 km each starting in a real relay, not only the individual results of the runners were added up as in the previous year. Like the team evaluation before, the competition was only of an unofficial character. It was not until the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1966 that four runners were used in the relay and the competition was finally official.
