The Hohentrüdingen Castle is the rest of a hilltop castle on a hill at 560 m above sea level. NHN above the district of Hohentrüdingen in the Heidenheim market in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in Bavaria .
Hohentrüdingen Castle was considered to be the largest medieval fortification between the middle Wörnitz and Altmühl .
history
The castle was built by the Counts of Truhendingen at the end of the 11th century and was first mentioned in 1129 in an Eichstätt document.
After the Truhendinger had received the land for their castle from the bishop of the Eichstätt monastery as a fief , in the middle of the 12th century they also received the bailiwick over the possessions of the Heidenheim monastery .
The other owners around 1340 are the Counts of Schaumberg, 1359 Albrecht von Wartenberg and 1363 Count Ludwig von Oettingen.
After the Truhendinger got into debt more and more in the 14th century and later died out in 1424, the castle went to the burgraves of Nuremberg in 1404 .
In 1716 the upper part of the tower was demolished and as early as 1732 the castle was described as a "very old building" and only contained the apartment of the chief bailiff .
In 1812 the castle was demolished except for the keep , which from 1819 served as the church tower of the village church .
description
The former very large castle complex had the still-preserved rectangular 27 meter high keep made of humpback ashlar masonry with a high entrance 9 meters high and a wall thickness of 4 meters below and 2.5 meters above.
The castle also had a pre-fortification to the west, a first 180 meter long outer bailey to the east and a second trapezoidal approximately 300 by 200 meter large outer bailey as well as ramparts.
The freely accessible keep serves as a viewing tower and offers a very beautiful view of the Hesselberg and Ries .
Remarks
The story of the minstrel Wolfram von Eschenbach goes back to around 1200. He praised the hospitality of the Counts of Truhendingen and spoke of the "Truhendinger pan" with its good donuts.
