Craig Fisher (born 1936 in Edmonton ; † August 6, 2018 ) was a Canadian racing car driver .
Family and education
When Craig Fisher was born, his father was Professor of English at Victoria University, Toronto . His father was rarely at home and volunteered during World War II . His mother and grandmother took care of his upbringing. After high school , he studied technical physics in Toronto . In order to be able to finance his studies, he worked with Werner Ornstein during his free time . The Austrian exiled was the owner of British Motors Canada Ltd. and the DKW general importer. Fisher broke off his studies and trained to be a car mechanic , which he completed and became a trainer for the DKW dealers. In his spare time, he started motor sports.
Racing career
Craig Fisher was the first Canadian to win a race in the US Trans-Am series . On August 12, 1967, he and partner Mark Donohue won the Marlboro Double 300 on a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 at the now closed Marlboro Motor Raceway in Maryland . Mark Donohue was also his partner in his best international race result. At the 1968 Sebring 12-hour race , the duo drove a Penske- Camaro to third place in the overall standings. Fisher was also engaged in the second Penske car, where he finished fourth with Bob Johnson and Joe Welch .
His driving career began in 1957, at local rallies and hill climbs . As a result, he became one of the most successful Canadian touring car drivers . He contested his races with almost everything there was to drive in touring car racing. From his first racing car, a DKW 3 = 6 Monza , to Chevrolets , Abarths and Sunbeams to Fords and Ferraris .
Craig Fisher won several SCCA championships and was a driver well into his 60s. He contested his last races in a Ferrari 348 in the Canadian GT Championship .
