Slipknot ( English running knot , a form of executioner's knot ) is an American metal band from Des Moines , Iowa , which was founded in 1995. They are one of the most successful metal bands in the world. A special feature of the band are face-covering masks; Until the 2004 album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) , all band members also wore uniform overalls.

history

1992–2000: Foundation and Slipknot

Slipknot's origins lie in the Basement Sessions from 1992, which were recorded in Paul Gray's basement. The singer at the time was Anders Colsefni (real name Andrew Rouw), a co-founder of the band, who later left and founded the band 'Painface'. A part of the songs that will appear on the later demo album Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. from 1996 can be heard. This album, limited to only 1000 copies, aroused the interest of several major music labels . In 1999 her debut album "Slipknot" was released under Roadrunner Records . Although the band's harsh, aggressive sound resulted in poor coverage on radio and music television , the album sold very well. Due to their spectacular appearance on stage, the band quickly grew into a large fan base.

2001–2006: Iowa and Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)

Mick Thomson masked on the NAMM Show, 2005

Iowa , the 2001 album, made the success even bigger: It reached number 3 on the Billboard Magazine album charts and number 1 on the UK album charts .

After appearing at the Two Days a Week Festival in summer 2002, there was a longer creative break, during which various band members devoted themselves to their solo projects. Towards the end of 2003, the band retired to the estate of producer Rick Rubin , who has already worked with a wide range of different artists - from Johnny Cash to the Beastie Boys to Slayer .

The result of the recordings is Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) , which was released in May 2004. For the first time, quieter tracks such as Vermilion Pt.2 and Circle can be heard on the album. On October 28, 2005, 9.0: Live, a double live album , was released which summarized sound recordings from several concerts on the world tour. In early 2006, the band received the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for Before I Forget .

2007–2010: All Hope is Gone and Paul Gray's death

According to the band, work on their album All Hope Is Gone began in late 2007 . It was released in the US on August 20, 2008, and was released in European countries on August 22. The first single Psychosocial was published on June 30, 2008.

On May 24, 2010, the band's bassist Paul Gray passed away in a hotel in Iowa. The autopsy revealed that Gray had died from an overdose of the pain reliever morphine combined with fentanyl and had also suffered from severe heart problems. Because of this event, guitarist James Root announced that he would take a break with the band for at least two years. Even before Paul Gray's death, Joey Jordison had announced a new album. In an interview after his death, he repeated that there would certainly be another work by Slipknot. In September 2010 Slipknot released the DVD (sic) nesses as an unofficial legacy to Gray .

2011–2013: Comeback, Antennas to Hell and departure of Joey Jordison

Slipknot returned for several appearances in 2011, with Slipknot founding member Donnie Steele playing bass as a tour member and close friend of the late Paul Gray. The performances began as headlining the Sonisphere Festival on June 17th in Athens and ended at Rock in Rio on September 25th 2011.

During their performance at the Sonisphere Festival in Athens, the band members wore their red overalls and sometimes their old masks from the time of the first album as a memory of the late Paul Gray. There was also a stand on the stage, over which another overalls hung and which wore Gray's mask. They were also seen in red overalls at their appearance at the Rock in Rio music festival in Rio de Janeiro on September 25, 2011. There they refused to allow the accredited journalists to take photos of the band from the stage area.

On June 11, 2012, the band announced the best-of album Antennas to Hell on their website . A box set also contains the recording of the (sic) nesses DVD on a second CD . All the music videos are on another DVD. In Germany the compilation was released on July 20th. Furthermore, the band planned to hold their own festival. The Knotfest was held August 17th and 18th in Council Bluffs , Iowa and Minneapolis , Minnesota , respectively . Slipknot acted as headliners on both nights. Other confirmed acts included a. the Deftones , Lamb of God and Serj Tankian .

In mid-December 2013, Slipknot announced via the official website that founding member Joey Jordison has left the band. This in turn announced on New Year's Day 2014 that he had been fired and had not left the band at his own request.

2014: First studio album in six years: .5: The Gray Chapter

In early August 2014, The Negative One, the first new song Slipknots without the participation of the late bassist Paul Gray and the former drummer Joey Jordison, was presented via the official website. Corey Taylor previously confirmed that the song was more of a gift for the fans than a single in itself.

A short time later the first real single was released with Devil in I. The band released the title of the new album and the cover shortly thereafter. On September 12th, a music video for the song was released, in which not only the new masks, but also the new drummer and the new bassist were shown for the first time. The latter was identified as Alex Venturella from his tattoos .

The album .5: The Gray Chapter was released on October 17th. In addition to the departure of Joey Jordison, there were also conflicts between guitarist James Root and singer Corey Taylor. These resulted from the fact that Root had been kicked out of the band Stone Sour by Taylor .

From October 2014 to February 2015 the band toured with Korn and King 810 in the Prepared for Hell Tour , including through Hamburg and Berlin . The band announced in January 2015 that they would tour together with Lamb of God , Bullet for My Valentine and Motionless in White on the Summer's Last Stand Tour this summer .

In December 2014, pictures appeared on the photo-sharing website Instagram confirming that Jay Weinberg is Slipknot's new drummer. The photo was posted by a recently sacked Slipknot crew member and showed a backstage list with all of the band member's names. The fired crew member probably acted out of revenge, as he tagged the pictures on Instagram with the hashtag #fuckslipknot (shit on Slipknot).

Since 2018: New single and sixth studio album We Are Not Your Kind

On October 31, 2018, Slipknot released a new single called All Out Life.

On March 18, 2019, the band released a statement in which it was announced that Chris Fehn is no longer part of the band. The end of his band membership was preceded by an accusation Fehns in which he accused singers Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan of embezzlement. It is unclear whether Fehn left voluntarily or was kicked out of the band. There is a statement on the band's homepage:

"Slipknot's focus is on making album # 6, and our upcoming shows around the world, our best ever. Chris knows why he is no longer a part of Slipknot. We are disappointed that he chose to point fingers and manufacture claims, rather than doing what was necessary to continue to be a part of Slipknot. We would have preferred he not take the path that he has, but evolution in all things is a necessary part of this life.

Long Live The Knot. "

The sixth studio album We Are Not Your Kind was finally released on August 9, 2019.

Band members and demeanor

All Slipknot members appear masked as a band. Exceptions are the music video for Before I Forget , in which individual unmasked facial sections can be seen, and an interview on the DVD Voliminal: Inside the Nine , in which the band takes a position on questions undisguised .

Slipknot's stage outfits, mostly overalls , are uniform, while the face masks are individually designed and have been subject to various changes over time. The masks should each have a relationship to the life of their wearer or point to character traits.

For each of the nine band members there is a number from 0 to 8. These numbers can be found on their stage outfits, among other things, some members display their number in the form of tattoos or corresponding jewelry on their instruments.

Band members timeline

Slipknot controversy

After the rampage in Erfurt in April 2002, the British newspaper Sun reported that the assassin Robert Steinhäuser was inspired to run rampage by a Slipknot song entitled "School Wars". A line of the song supposedly quoted from it read "Shoot your naughty teachers with a pump gun" (in German: Shoot your bad teachers with a pump gun ). However, such a song by the band does not exist.

TV stations also broadcast excerpts from the song “Eyeless” and referred the text “how many times have you wanted to kill” (in German: How often did you want to kill?) To teachers, although the song has no school context. An official statement from the band states:

“Our deepest condolences go to the victims and their families who suffer from this senseless act of violence. However, it is grotesque to blame a band or a particular style of music for doing this. Slipknot didn't write a song called "School Wars," and would never call people to kill others. We are a glimmer of hope for the youth, not a scapegoat for such massacres. By expressing our sincere condolences to those who suffered from the crime and its consequences, we nevertheless take no responsibility for it. To reiterate, we pray for the families of the victims. Thank you."

- Statement from the band

A similar incident occurred in the summer of 2008, a few days before the release of the new album All Hope Is Gone : An 18-year-old schoolboy from South Africa killed a classmate and injured two others. The perpetrator had worn a mask during his act that has similarities to Corey Taylor's stage outfit. Despite these facts, the band was exonerated by the local police; Frontman Corey Taylor said:

“Of course I am concerned that people have been injured and someone has died. But my responsibility for it ends there because I know that our message is actually pretty positive. "

- Corey Taylor in Blender Magazine

In August 2005, the band sued fast food chain Burger King for advertising using the band Coq Roq , which copied the style and demeanor of slip knots in the form of overalls and masks.
