Daniel "Danny" Ward (born June 22, 1993 in Wrexham ) is a Welsh football goalkeeper .

Athletic career

Ward went to fourth division FC Wrexham in 2007 at the age of 14 , who were relegated to the fifth division in 2008 and gambled there several times in the promotion playoffs in the following years. In March 2011 Ward was loaned to league rivals Tamworth FC . In January 2012 he moved to Liverpool FC , which loaned him to the fourth division club Morecambe in March 2015 . For the 2015/16 season he was awarded to the Scottish first division club FC Aberdeen , where he made 21 league appearances between August and December 2015 and was runner-up, which means the Scots qualified for the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League . In the Cup he failed with Aberdeen in the fourth round and in the Scottish League Cup 2015/16 in the round of 16. In the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League they were eliminated in the third qualifying round against Kazakh runners-up FK Qairat Almaty . After u. a. Ward was brought back to Liverpool in ten league games without conceding a goal in January 2016, but retained his status as third goalkeeper there. In April and May 2016 he played his first two first division games for Liverpool. On May 18, 2016, he was on the bench in the lost UEFA Europa League final .

In the 2016/17 season he was awarded to the second division team Huddersfield Town , where he made 45 appearances. The club only finished fifth in the table after the league round, but was able to prevail in the promotion round. He was used in the final against Reading, which was won 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes , as he was able to save two penalties.

He returned to Liverpool for the 2017/18 season, but had only three appearances in the U-23 team and was sold to Leicester City in July 2018 , where he is only the second goalkeeper behind the Danish national goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel .

National team

Ward played for the Welsh U-17 and U-19 teams , with whom he played a game in the first qualifying round for the 2011 U-19 European Football Championship in October 2011 . As group runner-up, the Welsh qualified for the second qualifying round, in which he was not used; his team was eliminated against Serbia . In goal was Jonathan Bond , who has played for England since the U-21. In September 2011 Ward came in two of the three defeats in the first qualifying round for the U-19 European Football Championship 2012 used. In 2012, he was sitting with two games of the 21-team U in the qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2013 in the bank. The Welsh were eliminated as fourth in the group. In qualifying for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2015 , he was in goal in five out of ten games and remained in the 1-0 in the first game against Moldova without conceding a goal. The Welsh lost with him against San Marino with 0: 1. For San Marino this was the first ever sporting victory in a European Championship qualification, before there were only two wins at the green table . As fourth, the Welsh were eliminated again.

On November 16, 2013, he sat on the bench for the first time with the senior national team in the friendly against Finland . Ten more international matches followed, in which he sat on the bench as a substitute goalkeeper, including seven qualifying games for the Euro 2016 . The Welsh qualified for the first time for a European Championship finals. After qualifying, he made his first appearance in the 1-1 draw against the Northern Irish on March 24, 2016, when he came on as a substitute for goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey in the second half .

On May 9, 2016, he was appointed to the provisional squad for the Euro 2016, with which a training camp began in Portugal on May 23, and was finally considered for the final squad. In the last test match before the European Championship he was substituted on for Hennessey in the second half. In the first EM game of the Welsh, which they won 2-1, he was in the starting line-up because Hennessey could not play due to back problems. It remained his only use, as Hennessey returned to goal in the second group game. The team was eliminated in the semifinals.

In 2017, 2018 and 2019 he made a total of four appearances in friendly matches, but he was part of the squad for qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , Euro 2020 and the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League .
