Derek Grant (born April 20, 1990 in Abbotsford , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League since February 2020 and plays for them on the position of the center .
Career
Grant was initially active from 2005 to 2006 for the Vancouver SE Flames from the lower class Canadian junior league BC Hockey Major Midget League . In the 2006/07 season he was on the ice for the Abbotsford Pilots from the Pacific Junior Hockey League . Following this season, the striker ran from 2007 to 2009 for the Langley Chiefs in the British Columbia Hockey League . Grant finished his rookie season in the jersey of the Langley Chiefs with 63 points scorer in 57 regular season matches, making him the team's second best scorer after top scorer Taylor Stefishen . He was then selected in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft at a total of 119th position by the Ottawa Senators . In the following season, the left-shooter played only 35 games in the British Columbia Hockey League, in which the striker scored 60 points. Grant then continued his career with a degree at Michigan State University and ran for their ice hockey team, the Spartans , in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association .
There he completed two personally successful seasons before the Canadian signed a three-year entry - level contract with the Ottawa Senators in March 2011 . During the 2010/11 season he made his debut for the AHL - farm team , the Binghamton Senators , on a professional level. By the end of the season he was on the ice in a total of 21 AHL games for the Senators and contributed eight points to the Binghamton Senators' Calder Cup win. The following game year Grant played exclusively in Binghamton and received no new contract in the organization of the Senators after the end of the season.
As a result, he was hired on July 1, 2015 as a free agent by the Calgary Flames , who used him mainly on their AHL farm team, the newly formed Stockton Heat . After his contract in Calgary was not renewed, he joined the Buffalo Sabers in July 2016 . After 35 missions for the Sabers Grant should be sent to the AHL in January 2017 via the waiver , but the Nashville Predators signed him . After just under a month and six NHL appearances for the Predators, Grant returned to Buffalo, also through a waiver commitment.
At the end of the 2016/17 season, his contract in Buffalo was not renewed, so Grant joined the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent in July 2017 . In the same way, he moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins in July 2018 . In Steel City , however, the attacker was only active until January 2019, when he was given to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Joseph Blandisi and thus returned to his previous employer. There he played for about a year until the trade deadline in February 2020, when he was given to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Kyle Criscuolo and a four-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft .
Achievements and Awards
- 2011 Calder Cup win with the Binghamton Senators
- 2016 Participation in the AHL All-Star Classic
