history

Former German embassy building

One of the first steps in official German-American relations is a 1785 trade agreement between Prussia and the United States. In 1817, Friedrich von Greuhm, the first Prussian ambassador, was sent. He is the only German ambassador to be buried in the United States. In 1848 the United States was the only foreign state to recognize the Frankfurt National Assembly . After the founding of the empire in 1871, the German Reich established diplomatic relations with the USA. The embassy building at the time was on Massachusetts Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets. In the following years, the embassy participated in what is now the Busch-Reisinger Museum at Harvard University . There was also an exchange in the scientific and military fields. American officers, for example, attended German military academies. With the beginning of the First World War , the relationship deteriorated. The unrestricted submarine warfare and an offer of alliance to Mexico ( Zimmermann Telegram ) eventually led to the declaration of war of the USA to the German Reich.

Carried out the re-establishment of diplomatic relations in 1921 with the deployment of Karl Lang as charge d'affaires . With the German-American agreement of August 10, 1922 , the Weimar Republic again sent a regular ambassador to Washington, namely Otto Wiedfeldt . After a period of normalization that led to power of the Nazis again to a deterioration of the relationship. In response to the events of the Reichspogromnacht in November 1938, the USA withdrew its ambassador from Berlin, whereupon the German ambassador was also called back. With the sinking of Allied merchant ships in the Atlantic by German submarines and their escort by the US Navy , there were military confrontations even before the declaration of war on the USA in 1941. The entry into the Second World War finally led to the breakdown of diplomatic relations.

In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was founded out of the three western occupation zones , which Heinz Krekeler sent to the USA as ambassador the following year . Military cooperation between the two states has existed since the German rearmament and accession to the North Atlantic Pact in 1955.

Between 1962 and 1964, the embassy building was built according to a design by Egon Eiermann . It is the only building by this architect outside of Germany. The building was renovated from 2010 to 2014; Among other things, energetic refurbishment measures were carried out, including the installation of a solar system, modernization of the house air conditioning and the installation of an LED lighting system. In July 2014 the German embassy returned.
