México ( Spanish Estado de México [ esˈtaðo ðe ˈmexiko ], officially Free and Sovereign State of México , Spanish Estado Libre y Soberano de México , sometimes for short Edomex ) is a central federal state of Mexico .
Geographically, the state of México forms the main part of the Valley of Mexico . In the south it is bounded by the Sierra Volcánica Transversal , in which the Popocatépetl ( 5462 m ) is the highest point in the state. The southeast of the state is in the valley of the Río Balsas . To the north lies the Toluca Valley , which is separated from the Mexico Valley by the Sierra de Ajusco .
With its particularly densely populated part, the state contributes slightly more than half to the (differently defined) metropolitan region of the Valley of Mexico - both in terms of inhabitants and area. The city of México , which forms a capital district, is surrounded in the north, east and west by the state of México in a hook shape without belonging to it. Other areas bordering the state of México are the states of Querétaro , Hidalgo , Morelos , Guerrero , Michoacán , Tlaxcala and Puebla .
It has an area of 22,499 km² and approx. 16 million inhabitants, making it the most populous state in Mexico. Administratively, the state is further subdivided into 125 municipalities . The capital of the state of México is Toluca de Lerdo . The vast majority of residents live in settlements around the capital, the largest of which are the cities of Ecatepec de Morelos and Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl . Other cities with at least 250,000 inhabitants are Chimalhuacán , Ciudad López Mateos , Cuautitlán Izcalli , Ixtapaluca , Naucalpan de Juárez , San Francisco Coacalco , Tlalnepantla , Villa Nicolás Romero and Xico .
Well known is the ruins of Teotihuacán , which is located in the north of the state and is one of the most important antiquities in America.
