Weiten has been a market town with currently around 1089 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Melk district in Lower Austria since 1313 .

geography

Weiten is located in the southern Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 28.48 square kilometers. 55.83 percent of the area is forested. The place is located in the valley of the Weitenbach stream flowing to the Danube .

The community was created on January 1, 1969 from the merger of the communities of Weiten, Mollendorf, Seiterndorf and Filsendorf.

Population development

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1153 inhabitants. In 1991 the market town had 1125 inhabitants, in 1981 1180 and in 1971 1185 inhabitants.

Community partnerships

In the 1990s, the Austrian side entered into an unofficial partnership with the Saarland village of Weiten , a district of the municipality of Mettlach an der Saar . This partnership was officially sealed in 2000.
