Eldari Luka Kurtanidze ( Georgian ელდარ (ლუკა) კურტანიძე ; born April 16, 1972 in Kwemo Pschawi near Gulripschi , Abkhazia , Soviet Union ) is a Georgian wrestler . Between 1992 and 2006, Eldari won a total of 19 medals at international championships.

Life

He started wrestling in Tbilisi when he was nine . His first coach was Schota Kekabidze. From 1988 he was looked after by the Olympic champion and multiple North Ossetian world champion Leri Chabelowi . The coaches shaped the stocky, only 1.70 m tall but between 90 and 100 kg heavy and very powerful athlete into one of the best freestyle wrestlers in the world.

At the age of 20 Kurtanidze made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the Junior European Championships in Székesfehérvár / Hungary and won the middleweight title. After a transfer to the seniors, Kurtanidze immediately gained a foothold there and became vice European and vice world champion in the light heavyweight division in 1993.

At the European Championships in Istanbul he was defeated by the North Ossetian Jambulate Tedeev , who competed for Ukraine . At the World Championships in Edmonton , Kurtanidze originally finished third with a victory over Macharbek Chadarzew , a North Ossetian starting for Russia , but since the winner, Abbas Jadidi from Iran, was disqualified at the award ceremony for grossly unsportsmanlike conduct, he was promoted to silver medalist .

Kurtanidze suffered a setback in 1994 when he finished 6th at the European Championships in Rome and only 10th at the World Championships in Istanbul . Kurtanidze won the next medal at an international championship at the 1995 European championship in Friborg / Switzerland . He was only defeated here in the final against Macharbek Chadarzew. At the World Championships in Atlanta in the same year he did not get along well and only finished 8th.

In April 1996 Kurtanidze won his first senior title with victory at the European Light Heavyweight Championships in Budapest . He defeated the German Heiko Balz from Luckenwalde in the final battle. Winning the European Championship was a success that Eldari repeated in 1997 in Warsaw , 1998 in Bratislava , 2001 in Budapest and 2005 in Varna . Eldari became world champion in Tehran in 2002 and in New York in 2003 . Finally Eldari won bronze medals in the light heavyweight division at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 and in Sydney in 2000 .

Between 1992 and 2006 Kurtanidze won a total of 19 medals at international championships, including the 1992 European junior championship. During this time he defeated most of the world elite wrestlers in the freestyle light heavyweight division at least once. These included Kenan Şimşek ( Turkey ), Jozef Lohyňa ( CSSR ), Heiko Balz ( Germany ), Islam Bairanmuk ( Kazakhstan ), Giorgi Gogschelidse ( Russia ), Alireza Heidari ( Iran ), Vincent Aka ( France ), Ahmet Doğu (Turkey) and Krassimir Kochev ( Bulgaria ).

Kurtanidze is now the coach of the Georgian national freestyle wrestling team. He took part in the 2006 World Cup, where he defeated Ioannidis Papadopoulos from Greece in the heavyweight division , but had to retire early from the USA after a loss to Preston "Tolly" Thompsson .

In 2003 he was voted the best athlete in Georgia . In Germany he has been wrestling with KSV Witten 07 , 1. Luckenwalder SC and KSV Germania Aalen for several years in the German Bundesliga since 1999 .

In 2009 Eldari Luka Kurtanidze took part in the 1st World Beach Championships in Obzor , Bulgaria , which took place under the official aegis of the FILA. He came in the class over 85 kg body weight with victories over Chussein Mechmed, Bulgaria and Artilheiro Rodriguez, Brazil and a defeat against Dimitar Kumchev , Bulgaria, on the 2nd place.

Eldari Luka Kurtanidze has been President of the Georgian Wrestling Association since the end of 2012.
