Ellsworth is a city in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 7,741 inhabitants in 3,305 households on an area of 243.25 km². Ellsworth is the Shire Town of Hancock County.

According to the United States Census Bureau , Ellsworth has a total area of 243.25 km², of which 205.33 km² is land and 31.6 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Ellsworth is located at the mouth of the Union River , the outflow of Graham Lake on Union River Bay on the Atlantic Ocean , in the south of Hancock County. Several larger lakes are spread over the area of the town. In the north of Green Lake , northeast of Graham Lakes , west of the Branch Lake and south of Lower Patten Pond . The surface is level, the highest point is the 156 m high Dollard Hill .

history
Ellsworth was organized as a town on February 26, 1800. Previously, the area was mapped as Plantation Number 7. The town was named after Oliver Ellsworth , one of the authors of the United States' Declaration of Independence and the third President of the US Supreme Court. The town's area expanded in 1809 and 1852 when it added areas of Dedham, Surry and Trenton.
Ellsworth became a City on February 27, 1869.
