The Fivers Margareten (eng. Fünfer ) are a men's handball club from Margareten , the 5th district of Vienna . The name of the Fivers is derived from this. The Fivers currently have no name sponsor.

At the moment the Fivers are the strongest handball team in Vienna and are in tough competition with the Vorarlberg team Alpla HC Hard . In 2011, the Fivers were able to prevail in the final of the Handball League Austria against the then series champion Bregenz Handball . With this, coach Peter Eckl was able to celebrate the first Austrian championship title in the club's history in his debut season.

history

After the First World War , a total of four Viennese clubs merged to form WAT Margareten in 1919 , from whose handball section, founded in 1920, today's Fivers emerged. The club experienced its heyday at that time and was the club with the most members in Europe. At that time the club played in the Vienna City League. At that time, however, the league only held five teams.

Since the association was deeply rooted in the working class and was therefore subject to a strong social-democratic coloring, it was banned by the Austrofascists . Even during the rule of the National Socialists, the association remained banned. After the Second World War , the WAT Margareten was re-established with the help of the former goalkeeper Johann Hefler.

In 1978 the handball players were able to move up to the State League B and in 1982 finally made the leap into the top Austrian league , which they still belong to today. By taking third place in the championship in the 1984 season, the club qualified for the first time for participation in the EHF Cup 1984/85. After victories against the Dutch club HV Aalsmeer , the French club USAM Nîmes and the traditional Swedish club Ystads IF , WAT Margareten only had to admit defeat to the later European Cup winner Minaur Baia Mare from Romania in the semifinals .

In 1999 the club achieved its greatest national success to date. Although the Viennese only narrowly failed to win the championship in the last game, they won the Austrian Cup a week later. After the runaway victory against UHC Tulln , Margaretner also got the upper hand against HC Bruck .

In 2003 the Margareten sports hall was opened at Hollgasse 3, 1050 Vienna, and the club was given the name "Fivers" (as a reference to the 5th district of Vienna) with a new logo as part of a complete renovation. The effort to attract young people with professional youth work makes the Fivers Austria's most successful club in this regard, with over 60 titles in the youth field since 2003. Since 2004, the Fivers have also won the HLA Young Talent Award every year.

In 2009, the HC Fivers succeeded in winning the ÖHB-Cup, their first title win since the name change, after HIT Innsbruck was defeated in front of a home crowd in the final . In 2011 the Fivers became Austrian champions for the first time, which meant that the Margaretners were allowed to take part in the EHF Champions League qualification for the first time . There they were eliminated in the first duel against Dinamo Minsk . In 2012, HC Fivers won the Austrian Cup again, in the final, after two extensions, ULZ Schwaz was defeated. In 2013 the ÖHB Cup title was defended against HC Hard in the final. The Fivers also won the Austrian Supercup in 2013 and 2014 against the reigning champion Alpla HC Hard .

In the 2013/14 season, a new chapter in the history of the Fivers was opened. The Fivers have been playing in the Bundesliga ever since, making them the first club in the history of Austrian handball to qualify for both the first and second leagues. At the end of the season, the Bundesliga team just barely achieved the goal of relegation. They occupied the penultimate place in the lower playoff but could then prevail in the best-of-three relegation duel 2-0 against HC Kärnten . With the first team you failed in the final of the league and the cup at HC Hard .

In 2015 the Fivers won the ÖHB-Cup again, in the final Bregenz Handball could be defeated after extra time. In 2015/16 the Margaretners were able to defend the cup title, the team also defeated the HLA Bregenz handball final and thus celebrated the second championship title in the club's history. The Fivers are currently the record winners in the ÖHB-Cup with seven cup titles since the introduction of the cup competition. In 2017/18 , the championship title was celebrated for the third time in the club's history.
