The football Oberliga Westfalen 1979/80 was the second season of the Oberliga Westfalen . Champions and promoted to the 2. Bundesliga was the SpVgg Erkenschwick with three points ahead of 1. FC Paderborn . The Erkenschwicker also qualified for the amateur championship , where they were eliminated in the first round against 1. FC Bocholt . The relegation ranks were occupied by SpVg Emsdetten 05 and TSG Harsewinkel . Hammer SpVg and STV Horst-Emscher rose from the association league . There was also the DSC Wanne-Eickel , who had not applied for a second division license and voluntarily relegated to the top division.
The season made for a unique event in German football. After Westfalia Herne won 1-0 at SC Herford on the first match day of the second division season 1979/80 , the DFB withdrew the license from Westfalia. The main sponsor Goldin went bankrupt after the owner Erhard Goldbach had not paid the mineral oil tax for years . The club Rot-Weiß Lüdenscheid , who had been relegated to sport, was then allowed to move up to the 2nd Bundesliga.
