Group C was characterized by the confident form of the host. South Africa and Saudi Arabia were cleared without any problems. Even the Danes, who were still weak up to this point, were defeated 2-1 by the French in an exciting game. Like Cameroon, Saudi Arabia was unable to match the performance of the last World Cup. The "desert princes", who surprised in 1994 with attractive football and reaching the last sixteen, were a disappointment.
Round of 16
80,000 | Stade de France ( Saint-Denis ) | Nigeria | Denmark | Urs Meier ( Switzerland ) | 1: 4 (0: 2) | 0: 1 Møller (3rd) 0: 2 B. Laudrup (12th) 0: 3 Sand (60th) 0: 4 Helveg (76th) 1: 4 Babangida (78th) |
The biggest disappointment of the round of 16 were the highly rated Nigerians, who suffered a bitter defeat against Denmark and had to travel home.
Quarter finals
35,500 | Stade de la Beaujoire ( Nantes ) | Brazil | Denmark | Gamal Ghandour ( Egypt ) | 3: 2 (2: 1) | 0: 1 Jørgensen (2nd) 1: 1 Bebeto (11th) 2: 1 Rivaldo (27th) 2: 2 B. Laudrup (50th) 3: 2 Rivaldo (60th) |
Brazil trembled against the underdog from Denmark in the semi-finals. After Denmark was able to take a 1-0 lead, the Brazilian favorites turned the game around before the break. Brian Laudrup equalized to 2-2 before Rivaldo brought the South Americans back into the lead after an hour. Shortly before the end, Denmark had two great chances through Marc Rieper, but they were missed and brought Brazil to the semi-finals.
