This article is about the Cameroonian women's national soccer team at the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada . Cameroon took part in the World Cup finals for the first time. The surprise team of the tournament was the only African team to make the knockout round, but failed there because of China . Cameroon qualified second at the 2014 African Cup. For Cameroon it was the second major international tournament after the 2012 Olympic Games .

qualification

Cameroon first had to qualify for the 2014 African Championship . The team only had to compete in the second round and was able to prevail against Senegal 1: 1 and 1: 0 to reach the African Championship in Namibia .

In total, coach Enow Ngachu used 19 players, of which only goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom and Raissa Feudjio , Yvonne Leuko , Gabrielle Onguéné , Ejangue Siliki and Francine Zouga were used in all seven games. The top scorer was Gaëlle Enganamouit with three goals.

preparation

On March 21st and April 11th, Cameroon played against Ethiopia in qualifying for the African Games and won both games 2-1. On May 10, they won a test match against World Cup participants Ivory Coast 3-2. They were scheduled to play against Liberia in qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games on May 3rd and 6th, but the Games did not take place as Liberia withdrew. On May 17th and 24th, the team will play test matches against the North Shore Girls Soccer Club in Vancouver . The first game was won 3-1.

When the groups were drawn, Cameroon was not seeded and was drawn to the group with defending champion Japan. Other opponents are the teams from Ecuador and Switzerland, who have also qualified for the first time. So far, no team in this group has played against any of the other teams.

According to the positions in the FIFA world rankings before the World Cup, this was the weakest group: defending champion Japan is in fourth place, but Cameroon only in 53rd place, Switzerland at least 19th place, but Ecuador only in 48th place; Group average = 31. In addition, it was the only group with three newcomers, which had never existed before.

In their first World Cup game against Ecuador, the Africans impressed with refreshing offensive football and were already 3-0 up at halftime. In the second part of the game they did not let up and added three more goals. So they achieved the highest victory of an African national team against a South American team. In the second game against world champions Japan, they initially showed weaknesses in defense and quickly conceded two goals. After that, Cameroon got better and better into the game, but could only score the next goal, although they were the better team, especially in the second half. In the last game against Switzerland, they were dominated by the Swiss in the first half and were lucky that they only scored once. In the second half they built on the performances from the first games, first scored the equalizer and then the lead to make it 2-1. After that they had the game under control, the Swiss women barely managed to get in front of the goal of the Africans and Cameroon brought the result through a time game and some acting performances over time. With two wins, they moved into the knockout round as second in the group and the first African team since 1999. There they met for the first time on China , which had previously only lost once in 13 games against an African team (2003 against Nigeria). Cameroon fell behind early on, then attacked too vehemently and mostly tried individual actions that did not lead to success. Cameroon was eliminated in the round of 16.
