The Gauliga Alsace was one of the top football leagues during the National Socialist era .

history

In the Gauliga Alsace (sports area 14a) from 1940, the teams from Alsace , which was occupied right at the beginning of the French campaign , played for the Gaume Championship and thus participation in the final round of the German football championship. Numerous clubs changed their French names and adopted German-language names. In the first season eight teams were represented in the league in two seasons, the second year was carried out in one season with twelve teams, in 1942/43 and 1943/44 only ten clubs fought for the Gaume Championship. In the 1944/45 season, the league was again divided into two groups, but it is not known whether there was any game operation at all.

In the 1940/41 season prevailed in the two seasons of Upper and Lower Alsace, the former French first division club FC Mulhouse 93 and Lawn Sports Club Strasbourg . The FCM won the finals , but failed in the final round of the German championship in the group matches. The second Alsatian Gaumeister, SG SS Strasbourg , reached the quarter-finals in 1941/42 . In the two following seasons, FC Mühlhausen again secured the title, but had to give up early in the German finals in 1942/43 and 1943/44 .
