Gevelsberg Hauptbahnhof (DB designation Gevelsberg Hbf) is on the Düsseldorf-Derendorf-Dortmund Süd railway line and belongs to station category  6. It should not be confused with the former Gevelsberg stop and today's Ennepetal (Gevelsberg) stop on the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway . From an operational point of view, Gevelsberg Hauptbahnhof is also a stopping point , as it no longer has switches. All other main train stations in Germany are train stations . In addition, Gevelsberg, Lörrach and Remscheid are the only “Hauptbahnhof” access points in Germany that are only served by S-Bahn trains.

The only train station in the city of Gevelsberg on the Düsseldorf-Derendorf-Dortmund Süd line that has additional track systems today is Gevelsberg West train station .

history

The Düsseldorf-Derendorf-Dortmund Süd railway line was built by the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft from 1873 onwards and was put into operation in parts as early as 1874. The construction phase of the Wuppertal Northern Railway, from Wuppertal-Vohwinkel to Hagen, did not take place until the end of the 1870s due to the dense development and complex route. Passenger traffic in the Mettmann-Wuppertal-Hagen section began on September 15, 1879. Today's stopping point was called Gevelsberg Rh . On January 1st, 1880, the "Royal Direction of the Rhenish Railway in Cologne" took over the management of the Rhenish Railway Company. In the same year the station was renamed Gevelsberg Nord .

Tracks and passenger waiting area at Gevelsberg Hbf

During the amalgamation of offices of the former BD Wuppertal , the station was renamed Gevelsberg Hbf on May 26, 1968 . Around 1969 the station consisted of seven tracks: the two continuous main tracks, a passing track and four freight train tracks, some with head ramps .

With the expansion of the line to the S8 S-Bahn line , the track and signal box systems were dismantled. This dismantling took place on June 27, 1984. The former station has since consisted of the stop on the double-track line. The expansion of the line to the S-Bahn line lasted until May 29, 1988.

traffic

The station is served by the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr on the Mönchengladbach – Düsseldorf – Wuppertal – Hagen ( KBS 450.8 ) connection : The S 8 line has been running every hour since May 2020, and since the timetable change in December 2014, the series has been used as multiple units Used in 1440 . Since May 1, 2020, there has been an almost half-hourly service together with the S 9 line, which is operated by Flirt 3 XL vehicles.

There is also a connection to local bus routes.
