The parks and green spaces , leisure facilities, play areas and the greenery along the road as well as the Mundenhof in Freiburg im Breisgau cover an area of 397 hectares, which corresponds to 18.05 m² of green space per inhabitant. The average of the large cities in Baden-Württemberg is 22.66 m² of green space per inhabitant. However, Freiburg has a high proportion of forest close to the city and other recreational areas such as the Rieselfeld . A large part of the systems was built from the 1960s.

Parks

Dietenbachpark

Three trees for Germany's unity

The construction of the Dietenbachpark on the outskirts of Weingarten ⊙ began in 1974, but was not completed until 1986. With 34.88 hectares, it is the largest of the Freiburg parks. This is where the Dietenbachsee is located, which was created in 1982 when gravel was extracted for the construction of the Westrandstrasse. On the north side of the lake, a wall was raised from the earth, which covered the layer of gravel and had to be removed. This also prevents the renatured Dietenbach from flowing into the lake, which is exclusively fed by groundwater. In summer, people bathe there (naked).

In this landscape park grow u. a. Scattered fruit trees and dog roses, daisies , snail clovers and widow flowers , which attract butterflies such as feather spirits , painted ladies and bluebells .

At a crossroads south of the lake, a four-meter high cross rises up. The word "peace" is engraved in the base in twelve languages. Thanks to an ecumenical initiative, it may a. as a sign of the many cultures that live in Weingarten.

Sports facilities for the public, the Weingarten sports group and the Freiburg FC (Freiburg Stadium in Dietenbach; "Contempo Stadium") with clubhouse and restaurant as well as barbecue and playgrounds round off the offer. The skate park , which was inaugurated at the beginning of 2015, was enlarged to 2,400 square meters in 2020. It contains street elements such as stairs, railings and sidewalk edges, but also halfpipes . The heart of the facility is a replica of the "Arto Saari Bowl", a Californian swimming pool . In addition to a generation playground , there has also been Freiburg's first parkour area nearby since July 2020 .

In the summer of 2012, a 72-year-old citizen planted an approx. 15 m² vegetable patch in the park. The city is now accepting its urban horticulture .

In 2014, three trees were planted for Germany's unity at Mundenhofer Steg . In December 2015 someone tried to cut the jaw.

Eschholzpark

"Garden hose"

Due to the construction of the Technical Town Hall and the school center, 370 allotment gardens were no longer available in Stühlingen : In 1979, it was decided to build the "Eschholzpark" , and in 1982 it was opened. It was laid out on 37.5 hectares in a block structure characteristic of the Stühlinger.

Not to be overlooked is a large sculpture depicting a water tap with a red garden hose, it was created by Claes Oldenburg after a competition and is intended to remind of the displaced allotment gardens. This meadow and the roundabout adjoining it to the south with its perennial garden, pergola with wisteria and hedges are framed by an avenue of chestnut trees. Another lawn for sunbathing and playing with a slackline facility , separated from it by a footpath and bike path, forms the end to the south. There is also a toddler playground.

From the beginning, the park was also used for events, with protests from the population again and again. In 1984 the tent music festival took place there once . At the end of the 1990s, the Freiburg Theater found an alternative venue in the tent during the renovation of its house on Bertoldstrasse. During the soccer world championships in 2006 and 2010 there was public viewing in Eschholzpark with up to 10,000 visitors last time. A corresponding event for the European Football Championship 2012 was canceled by the organizer. Since 2005, the Friedrich-Weinbrenner-Gewerbeschule has hosted the European Stone Festival in Freiburg's Eschholzpark every three years.

Joseph Brandel Plant

In the Freiburg district of Haslach on Guildfordallee , this park, which is quite unknown beyond the district, is located: the 4.35 hectare complex, which was completed at the end of the 1960s, goes back to an initiative of the former Lord Mayor Joseph Brandel . A memorial stone in the form of a glacier mill , which a Freiburg businessman found on the Rhine near Bad Säckingen, commemorates the former mayor; Some valuable exotic tree species and a perennial garden with seating can be found as well as two playgrounds, one of which is a water playground. Several footpaths and cycle paths lead through the park and connect it to St. Georgen by means of a bridge over Guildfordallee . Various works of art made of stone and metal can be found in the northern part - they were created in 2006 by students from the Vigelius School in collaboration with the aerobatic sculpture workshop .

Konrad-Guenther-Park

Konrad-Guenther-Park with damaged oaks

In 1934 the Möslepark north of the railway line was expanded to include a forest Wäl , which was later transformed into a nature park and named in 1954 after the Freiburg zoologist Konrad Guenther . Against the bitter resistance of the population, numerous old trees were felled in 1996 to make way for the construction of the B 31 East. Too many trees were accidentally felled and the regional council had to pay the city the equivalent of around € 130,000, which was invested in work in Möslepark. Groundwater flows were interrupted by the construction of the road, which led to the death of numerous trees. However, it is important to conserve these trees as well, as they are habitats for bats. Today the Konrad-Guenther-Park covers an area of around 6.5 hectares. The Kapriole private school is located on the edge of the park .

Möslepark with forest lake

Forest lake with pavilion

Created from 1879 to 1885 as a landscape park according to plans by the city gardener Maximilian Wilhelm Schmöger, Möslepark ⊙ is one of the oldest in Freiburg. In 1877 , two ponds for the Neumeyer brewery were created for ice production south of the railway line, in today's Waldsee district . (A former restaurant building of this brewery can still be seen today on Schwabentorring at the corner of Kartäuserstraße.) The association founded in 1873 for the beautification of the city suggested the creation of the park shortly thereafter. It owes its name to the abundance of water. The city's oldest spring taps can be found here. In 1881 a third pond was created, which today, merged with the first two, forms the forest lake. On the west bank is the Waldsee restaurant with lake terrace, which was opened in 1883 and is still very popular with the Freiburg population as an excursion restaurant and event location. After the First World War , the heavily overgrown eleven hectare park was thinned out and slightly redesigned. The western part was thinned in 2015 and the eastern part in 2016 in order to restore the earlier alternation between dense and clear zones.

You can go boating on the forest lake in summer and ice-skating in winter. 1,000 fish perished in August 2018 due to the heat and drought . The high water temperature, the dried out inlet and the thick layer of mud, which left the lake only 1.50 meters deep, have led to a lack of oxygen. As an immediate aid, the fire brigade pumped the lake water around and enriched it with oxygen. By the beginning of 2019, the lake had been desludged again after 18 years. The protected pond mussel , the great river mussel and the painter's mussel were recovered beforehand and were then used again. The exotic Chinese shell was not used again. So that the mussels can reproduce, appropriate host fish are introduced into the forest lake, which is currently fish-free. 1,000 have already been recovered, last time only 900.

A youth traffic school has been located south of Waldseestrasse since 1960 . In the Möslepark you will find oaks , hornbeams and mighty rhododendrons that are up to 200 years old . It is an important habitat for bats like the great noctule bat . The park is part of the conservation area, Lorettoberg-Günterstal-Littenweiler . From 1973 to 1990 there was an annual flea market in Möslepark. For nature conservation reasons, it is no longer held there.

The Waldseestrasse was already closed to traffic in 1956 because of toad migration between Waldsee and Möslepark. Toad protection fences have been erected regularly since the mid-1970s. 2019 should be the last time, because from 2020 there should be an amphibious guidance system. But despite two toad tunnels, the guidance system is missing and cyclists continue to use the closed Waldseestrasse. In the meantime, this section has been reduced from 5.30 meters to 3.50 meters and permanently closed to all vehicles. Previously, the edge road along the north and east side of the park had to be renovated for 740,000 euros. This was a compensatory measure for the Rotteckring project in the city center. However , there is not enough money to completely unseal the Waldseestrasse, as demanded by NABU and the Oberwiehre-Waldsee Citizens' Association. As a result of the overturning of the lake, the amphibian population decreased from 2,381 pairs of toads in 2002 to 395 in 2019.

Moosweiher Park

Moss pond

The eleven meter deep Moosweiher was created by removing gravel for the construction of the A5 in the years 1960 to 1962, i.e. before the associated Landwasser district was created. In 1966 it was named Moosweiher by the local council and in 1968 the quarry pond was recultivated by the gardening authority, paths with benches, lawns and a children's playground were created. A restaurant, mini golf, toilets and sports facilities with a clubhouse were added later.

The 15.3 hectare park around the Moosweiher is now a natural landscape park with alder , oak , ash , poplar and willow trees . In addition to the exposed red and yellow-cheeked ear turtles , the nutria has also become native there.

You can swim in the lake and there is a half-pipe for skateboarders on the north bank. The Landwasser Triathlon took place there from 1987 to 2010.

Stühlinger church square

View of Stühlinger Kirchplatz and Herz-Jesu-Kirche

The 18 hectare Stühlinger Kirchplatz between the main train station and the Herz-Jesu-Kirche um was redesigned in 1985, after parts of the old area were lost when the Stadtbahnbrücke (now Stühlinger Brücke ) was built in 1983, but they were compensated for elsewhere. The geometrically designed park with a central lawn, in which the Cologne artist Ralf Witthaus milled a pattern with brushcutters in 2011, is framed by a pergola in the east.

The concrete sculpture Two Giants is located under the Stühlinger Bridge . One of them spits. One swallows. by Franz Gutmann . You can shop between the two giants on Wednesday and Saturday mornings at the Stühlingen farmers' market.

From 1894 to 1929 the church square was also the Messplatz in Freiburg. A nostalgic fair with old rides has been held there every year since 1995 . In 2012 there was also the final concert of the Freiburg Parade by Basel Tattoo .

Since this place close to the city center is also frequented by homeless or addicts, two or three times a week two urban social workers have been there with their neighborhood mobile since 2008. Because of drug trafficking and robberies, the place has fallen into disrepute for years, especially at night.

More parks

The following parks are dealt with in more detail elsewhere (see link) and are therefore only briefly described here.

  • The Seepark in the west of the city was created in 1986 as a state horticultural show area including a quarry pond . With numerous leisure facilities and a town hall with a restaurant and observation tower , it is the most visited park in the city.
  • The city garden was completed in 1888 north of the old town , from which it can be reached today via the Karlssteg . Badly damaged in 1944, today it has not only some old trees and lawns but also shrub and alternating flowerbeds, a rose garden, two water basins, a music pavilion, a children's playground and a kiosk. An inclined elevator and the Mozart footbridge connect it to the Schlossberg.

Urban horticulture

Grünspange at the town hall with urban horticulture

The example of urban horticulture in Dietenbachpark was followed by others, e. B. in the Joseph-Brandel-Anlage, in Rieselfeld (Grünkeil) and sometimes even in front of the Freiburg Theater .

Roadside green

Again and again there is resentment in the population, for example when trees are felled because of construction sites. In autumn 2017, 47 trees were felled for the demolition and new construction of the Volksbank at the main train station. The city has had bad experiences with tree planting, but wants to give them another chance. Storms also claim victims under the trees. Although the Freiburg gardening and civil engineering department regularly checks all trees for stability, a robinia fell over in Bertoldstrasse in July 2018 . The examination revealed that the roots had rotted away. The so far very resistant robinia are now susceptible to fungus and root rot. For this reason, the city wants to cut down all the locust trees in Bertoldstrasse. Six of them are already damaged. They are to be replaced by city pears.

When the square of the Old Synagogue and the Rotteckring were redesigned for the construction of the tramway , new trees (including leather sleeve trees and purple alders ) were planted, some with ventilation and irrigation systems.

Guerrilla gardening

After the city in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed restaurants in the Sedan district of the old town, among others , to use parking spaces for open-air seating until October 31, which were partially greened by the hosts, Extinction Rebellion closed four at the end of June planted raised beds with bicycle racks illegally in other parking lots , which were initially partially removed by the city. In August, after traders asked for more bike racks and there had been talks between the city, the Citizens' Forum and Extinction Rebellion, they were put up again.

Lakes

With the exception of the Waldsee and Deicheleweiher, which were also artificially created, all of the lakes in the Freiburg district are quarry ponds that were created when gravel was extracted. More detailed description in the Alemannic Wikipedia .

Forest areas

Sternwaldwiese with Maria-Hilf-Kirche in the background

Freiburg lies at the interface between the Black Forest and the Upper Rhine Plain. That is why there are two different forest types in the Freiburg district: In the north and west is the moss forest, which is part of the alluvial forests , the forests in the east and south are known as mountain forests and, with the exception of Schönberg, are part of the Black Forest. The mountain forests make up 60% of the 5,200 hectare urban forest.

In March 2020, the forestry office planted over 23,000 trees in the northern moss forest. Due to the persistent drought that followed, these plantations were in danger. Therefore, from the end of April they were irrigated with water from the Brandbach, which was pumped to them with the help of a diesel generator.

Douglas fir cones are regularly picked in the Freiburg city forest by mostly freelance cone pickers , who also often spend the night in the forest. Since the Freiburg Douglas firs, which originate from North America, are characterized by fine branches and slim, straight growth, the seeds are popular throughout Germany. In 2020, around 49 tons of the green cones were harvested from several hundred trees. The forestry department received 54,000 euros from the sale of the cones to forest seed dealers and forest tree nurseries. The Freiburg harvest corresponds to around 80 percent of all Douglas fir cones harvested in Baden-Württemberg.

dryness

Stühlinger Kirchplatz with Sacred Heart Church in the drought summer 2018

During periods of drought such as 2003 and 2018, the lawns in Freiburg's parks dry up. They are not watered. Barbecue and smoking are also prohibited there and in the forests. As a rule, the lawns recover after heavy rain, and some fertilizers are used. Where there is no recovery, new sows are planted or turf is laid out on small areas . Although the gardening and civil engineering department supplies the young trees in the urban area with 150 to 200 liters of water every three weeks, many trees shed some of their leaves in summer to reduce the evaporation area. As a result of the drought, the city had to cut six trees in the Am Powder Tower green area .
