Location of the Hochkreuz district in the Bad Godesberg district of Bonn
The high cross

Hochkreuz is a district of the federal city of Bonn in the north of the Bad Godesberg district and part of the federal quarter . It is named after a wayside cross (→ Hochkreuz (wayside cross in Bonn) ) that stood at the intersection of Bundesstraße 9 with the road between Friesdorf and Plittersdorf .

geography

The southwest half of Hochkreuz is in the Friesdorf district and its northeastern half, which belongs to the Rheinaue, is in the Plittersdorf district. The statistical district of Hochkreuz-Bundesviertel has a demarcation that differs slightly from the district of Hochkreuz. It also includes a narrow strip of the Friesdorf district to the west of Bundesstraße 9. Hochkreuz is part of the Catholic Rheinviertel or the Protestant Thomas parish.

history

After Bonn became the federal capital in 1949 , the sparsely populated area found itself in the immediate vicinity of the newly created government district in Gronau . As a result, a number of federal authorities and ministries came into being here , some of them not until the late 1980s (at that time also the Syrian embassy ). The original plan was to allow Hochkreuz to grow together with Gronau through several new ministerial buildings. In order to preserve the green spaces in the new heart of the city, the city of Bonn created the Rheinaue landscape park for the 1979 Federal Horticultural Show .

In addition to the apartments of around 2,000 residents, there are now several federal ministries, federal authorities and embassies in Hochkreuz , including the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the "Kreuzbauten", the Federal Ministries for Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) and for the Environment and Nature Conservation , and nuclear safety (BMU). In addition, the district is the seat of the Federal Railroad Assets (BEV), the newly established Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and the related Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB). There are also offices of various large companies. The headquarters of the television station Phoenix is located in Hochkreuz , in whose building the local and federal studio of the WDR and a studio of the ZDF are located.

Attractions

The high cross , which gives the district its name, is a Gothic votive column that was erected in 1333 under the influence of the Cologne cathedral building hut . A copy is now at the Hochkreuz / Deutsches Museum Bonn tram stop . The original stone column has been in the care of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn since 1979 .

The Kreuzbauten were built between 1965 and 1972 and have been a listed building since 2004. Between 2004 and 2010 the building ensemble was extensively renovated and a. used as an office building by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Institute for Adult Education and the Federal Railway Authority .

In the Hochkreuz district, in a side street of Kennedyallee, Cheruskerstraße, the Heilig Kreuz church , which belongs to the Catholic parish of St. Andreas and St. Evergislus and named after the Hochkreuz, is located. It was completed for the Heilig-Kreuz-Gemeinde, founded in 1957, in 1965 according to plans by the architects Stefan Leuer and Willi Zachert, and in 1967 a free-standing bell tower was added. The building is a red brick structure in the shape of a tent.

The amusement park Rheinaue , called by the locals just "the Rheinaue", is a 160 hectare recreational area created as a park, which is largely located in the district of Hochkreuz. The main features of the park were created on the occasion of the Federal Garden Show in 1979 . Today, the Rheinaue is an important part of Bonn's leisure and cultural landscape. There are regular events such as " Rhine in Flames ", the beer exchange and the concert series "Art! Lawn", at which world stars such as Sting, the Scorpions, Tom Jones and Katie Melua have performed.
