The 1897 edition of the Home Nations Championship tournament in rugby union (later the Five Nations or Six Nations ) could not be finished. Wales was boycotted by the rest of the federations because Welsh team captain Arthur Joseph Gould had received financial compensation and this was viewed as illicit professionalism. Only Gould's resignation solved this problem.
