Career

society

Youth in Alsace and South Baden (1994 to 2009)

Schmid began playing football at the age of four at the Racing Strasbourg football school and, at the age of 16, went to SC Schiltigheim for one season in 2006 after being eliminated from Racing . A year later he moved to Mars Bischheim for half a year . During the winter break of the 2007-08 season he moved to the youth of the German Sechstligisten Offenburg FV on the other side of the Rhine and in the summer of 2008 in the football school of SC Freiburg .

First period as a professional at SC Freiburg (2009 to 2015)

For the 2009/10 season Schmid moved up to the reserve team of SC Freiburg. He made his debut on August 15, 2009, when he was substituted on in the 65th minute of the game against the second team of Karlsruher SC . However, Schmid did not play in the regular formation and was only four times over 90 minutes on the field in his 18 appearances. In the first half of the following season he got more playing time in the regional league. On January 22, 2011, he made his professional debut in the Bundesliga team when he came on after 68 minutes in a 1-1 draw against 1. FC Nürnberg . A few weeks later, he signed a professional contract and was there two more times in the Bundesliga before playing for SC Freiburg II again.

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season he continued to play in the reserve team. After he made his second Bundesliga game against Hertha BSC on November 19, 2011, he established himself in the top team of the professional team. In February 2012, he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga against Werder Bremen . He rose to a high performer and was able to book 22 appearances at the end of the season. In the 2012/13 season he had a share in Freiburg's entry into the European Cup with eleven goals and six assists. On September 11, 2013, he extended his contract with SC Freiburg. After the 2014/15 season , Schmid, who started 32 times this season, was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with SC Freiburg . He was the best preparer with eleven assists, scored four goals himself and was involved in 15 of the 36 goals of the Freiburg season.

Four years in Hoffenheim and Augsburg (2015 to 2019)

After SC Freiburg was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga, Schmid moved to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for the 2015/16 season . He received a contract that ran until June 30, 2019. He wore the number 10; in return, Vincenzo Grifo moved to Freiburg. In Kraichgau he was initially one of the regular players under coach Markus Gisdol and his successor Huub Stevens , but under Julian Nagelsmann he found himself on the bench more often or was not part of the squad. TSG Hoffenheim played against relegation this season and only managed to stay on the penultimate matchday.

In August 2016, he moved to league rivals FC Augsburg , with whom he received a four-year contract. After the Augsburg team had only three wins up to and including the 14th matchday under coach Dirk Schuster , brought in from SV Darmstadt before the start of the season , under the new coach Manuel Baum an increase in performance was achieved that resulted in relegation to a place in the lower midfield. Schmid was able to secure a regular place in his first season in Augsburg and scored one goal in 25 games. In the following season he was part of the starting line-up in the first two games, but in the following period Schmid lost his regular place. Only from the 24th matchday he was back in the Augsburg starting line-up, and with the exception of the away game against Hannover 96 , he played for the entire duration of the game. In his third and final season, Schmid was one of the regular players and top performers; he scored three goals in 28 games.

Return to Freiburg (since 2019)

For the season 2019/20 returned Schmid to his youth club SC Freiburg back and completed 33 of 34 season games in which he scored five goals.

National team

Schmid was brought up for discussion for the Austrian senior national team in the first half of the 2010s , but he does not have Austrian citizenship and was never naturalized, so that he was denied a role for the ÖFB team. In February 2020, he expressed his interest in playing for the Algerian national team, although the Algerian national coach Djamel Belmadi had denied contact with Schmid.
