Karl Berg (born December 27, 1908 in Radstadt , State of Salzburg ; † September 1, 1997 in Mattsee ) was the 76th Archbishop of Salzburg .

Life

Karl Friedrich Berg was born in Radstadt on December 27, 1908, the son of the then kk tax administrator Josef Berg (born March 14, 1861) and Katharina Berg (born Kratochwil, November 3, 1871) . His parents had married on November 16, 1893 in Litovel .

Karl Berg graduated from the Borromäum grammar school in Salzburg- Parsch as a Salzburg Kapellknabe and then studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome . Berg was ordained a priest in Rome on October 29, 1933 .

After returning to Salzburg, Berg first became a chaplain in the Bürgerspitalkirche , then in the Erhardkirche and then in Angath . Later he was Subregens and soon Regens (director) at the seminary in Salzburg. 1969 appointed him Archbishop Edward Macheiner the vicar general in the Archdiocese of Salzburg.

On December 26, 1972, he was elected 76th Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Salzburg by the Cathedral Chapter . Pope Paul VI confirmed the election on January 9, 1973. Archbishop Andreas Rohracher and Bishops Paulus Rusch and Joseph Köstner donated his episcopal ordination on February 25, 1973 . In 1973, Berg appointed Jakob Mayr as the new Vicar General in the Archdiocese of Salzburg .

In 1984 Archbishop Berg received the Grand Cross of Honor of the State of Salzburg . In 1987 the archbishop and the rector of the Kollegienkirche ordered that the George Tabori production of Franz Schmidt's book with seven seals - a production of the Salzburg Festival in the Kollegienkirche - had to be discontinued because “the acts depicted contradicted religious dignity”.

In 1988 Pope John Paul II accepted Karl Berg's resignation. In 1989 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Salzburg . After his retirement, the old archbishop lived very secluded in Mattsee, where he died on September 1st, 1997. He was buried in the crypt of Salzburg Cathedral .
