Litovel (German Littau ) is a town in the Okres Olomouc in the Czech Republic .
geography
It is located at the foothills of the Drahaner Bergland in the March valley . Because of the six arms of the March that flow through the city, it is popularly known as the Hannakisches Venice ( Hanácké Benátky ). A river arm even flows directly under the town hall tower.
history
In the place of today's old town of Litovel originally stood a fishing village. The river arms of the March gave the place natural protection thanks to its island location. In the middle of the 13th century Přemysl Otakar II founded a royal town next to the village . In 1291 Václav II granted her some privileges, and John of Luxembourg approved the construction of city walls. After the Hussite Wars , the city lost its royal privileges and came under the rule of the Vlašim , who were followed by the Boskowitz at the beginning of the 16th century . During this time, among other things, the Renaissance town hall with its 72 meter high tower was built. At the beginning of the 17th century, the people of Liechtenstein came to the city through marriage, which gradually lost its former importance in the following years. Raids by the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War, fires and the plague sealed the decline. After the reconstruction, Litovel became a district town in 1850 with around 2880 mainly German citizens. In 1899 the relationship was reversed due to immigration, so that the Czechs won the municipal elections. At the beginning of the 20th century, the place became a commercial and educational center in the region alongside the still predominantly German cities of Olomouc and Uničov .
The town is famous in Moravia for its brewery , which was founded in 1893.
