Kevin [ ˈkɛvɪn ] is an anglicized male given name of Irish origin.

Origin and meaning

The name comes from the Irish and first Old Irish as Coemgen [ koiṽʲʝʲenʲ occupied] middle irish Caoimhghín [ kəiṽʲʝiːnʲ ]. The present form is in Modern Irish Caoimhín ([ k ɰ Ivin ]). The well-known form Kevin is the Anglicized version of the Irish name.

The name is composed of the Irish caomh (Old Irish cóem ) "dear / dear, loved, belonging to the family, beautiful, noble" and -gin (Old Irish gein ) "birth, child".
