The Small Historic Cities ( KHS for short ) are an amalgamation of 14 small towns (as of June 2019) in Austria, the aim of which is to present a common tourist presence and to increase the awareness of the members and the umbrella brand at home and abroad.
history
Until the founding of the KHS in 1994, the range of city tourism offers was only covered by applications from the state capitals. On the part of Österreich Werbung (ÖW), on the one hand, recreational holidays with hiking, riding, skiing and the like, and on the other hand, cultural tourism through the merger of ARGE Cities (an association of provincial capitals ) were actively promoted or included in the marketing activities. As a result of this constellation, small towns with a thoroughly interesting cultural offering have not been involved in widespread advertising activities.
At the end of 1993, under the chairmanship of Walter Hödl, former director of the Wels tourism association, and Wolfgang Neubaur, tourism director of Steyr, a proponent committee was formed with potential partners, the aim of which was to find participants in all federal states (except Vienna) who would like the idea of Support the establishment of an association of small towns in Austria and turn this working group into an offer group for Österreich Werbung . At that time, 14 cities joined the project. At the general assembly in May 2007 in Lienz, 18 cities worked together.
criteria
The following criteria must be met by the member cities:
- Tourist infrastructure
- At least 300 beds in the three- and four-star category
- Professional local tourist organization ( tourist board or similar)
- Urban data
- City with city rights
- Listed historical buildings and districts
- up to 80,000 inhabitants
Membership in the KHS is exclusively reserved for cities in Austria or their tourist organizations. National tourism organizations as well as professional associations and businesses are excluded from it. Intensive cooperation is maintained with these organizations.
Around twenty members are set as the upper limit for cities. An attempt is made to win at least one city per federal state (with the exception of Vienna). When a new city is added, all other members are to be included.
Due to their membership in the ARGE Cities, state capitals are not also allowed to be members of the KHS. Double membership is not possible.
