Preliminary round
September 14, 1962
The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - qualified for the semi-finals.
How these preliminary divisions could come about and why a preliminary round with subsequent semi-finals was even scheduled for only sixteen participants is incomprehensible. Two of the preliminary runs were occupied by five athletes, two of whom were eliminated. In each of the other two preliminary round races, only three hurdlers started who only had to reach the finish in order to qualify for the next round. None of them dropped out.
