The men's hammer throw at the European Athletics Championships in 1966 was held on September 3 and 4, 1966 in Budapest's Népstadion .
In this competition the medal rankings were the same as in the 1964 Olympic Games . The European champion was the Soviet thrower Ramuald Klim . The Hungarian defending champion Gyula Zsivótzky took silver . Bronze went to the German Uwe Beyer .

Record improvement
European champion Ramuald Klim improved the existing EM record at these European championships in the final on September 4th by 38 centimeters to 70.02 m.
qualification

The seventeen participants competed in a common qualifying round. The qualification distance for the direct entry into the final was 62.00 m. Since only eleven athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue), the final field was filled with the next best placed athlete to twelve throwers (highlighted in light green). So finally 61.78 m was enough for the final.
