The 3000 meter obstacle course for women at the European Athletics Championships 2018 took place on August 10th and 12th in the Olympic Stadium in the German capital Berlin .
The German Gesa Felicitas Krause became European champion . The Swiss Fabienne Schlumpf won the silver medal. Bronze went to the Norwegian Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal .

The only European who was able to stand up to the Africans and Americans as a world class runner in recent years was the German Gesa Felicitas Krause, who was third in the 2017 World Cup and European champion in 2016 . However, Krause had a few problems getting to the top of her performance this season. After good results, the Swiss Fabienne Schlumpf was seen as one of the toughest competitors. Other medal candidates were the Albanian Vice European Champion from 2016 Luiza Gega and the Turkish European Championship third from 2016 Özlem Kaya, who had already been eliminated in the run-up.
At the beginning, the Slovenian Maruša Mišmaš sat at the head of the field, but was soon replaced by Schlumpf. The Swiss showed a brisk pace. She covered the first kilometer in 3: 05.79 minutes. In the further course, Schlumpf stayed in front, and although it was a little slower - second kilometer: 3: 09.53 min - there were gradually clear gaps in the field of runners. With two laps to go, the Swiss was ahead, three meters behind her a three-man chasing group with Krause, the Norwegian Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal and Gega had formed. In the penultimate lap, Krause caught up with Schlumpf, with the Norwegian still following in third place a few meters behind. There was also a small gap between her and fourth-placed Gega.
So it went into the last round. The other chasers from fifth place onwards had nothing to do with the outcome of the race, they were about twenty meters behind Gega. On the last crossing of the moat, Krause attacked. With a clear increase in tempo, she passed Schlumpf and quickly ran out of an increasingly larger lead. At the finish, Gesa Felicitas Krause defended her title and became European champion for the second time. The order behind her didn't change anymore. Fabienne Schlumpf won the silver medal ahead of Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal and Luiza Gega. Fifth was the Israeli Adva Cohen, who set a new national record. The German Elena Burkard came in sixth place. The Danish seventh Anna Emilie Møller also set a new national record. The Spaniard Irene Sánchez-Escribano finished eighth.
