The men's triple jump at the World Athletics Championships 1987 was held on August 30 and 31, 1987 in the Olympic Stadium in the Italian capital, Rome .
World champion was the reigning European champion Christo Markow from Bulgaria . The US Olympic runner-up in 1984 Mike Conley Sr. won the silver medal. Third place went to Oleg Sakirkin from the Soviet Union .

Record improvement
World champion Christo Markow from Bulgaria improved the existing World Cup record in the final on August 30th by exactly half a meter to 17.92 m and at the same time set a new European record.
Wind conditions
In the following summary of results, the wind conditions for the best jumps are named. The permitted limit is two meters per second. With stronger wind support, the distance will be counted for the competition, but will not be included in the lists of records and the best.
qualification
August 30, 1987
32 participants competed in two groups for the qualifying round. The qualification distance for direct entry into the final was 16.85 m. Five athletes exceeded this mark (highlighted in light blue). The final field was filled with the next placed athletes to actually twelve jumpers. The twelfth best distance of 16.57 m was achieved by two athletes, both of whom were approved for the final. Eight participants qualified for the final (highlighted in light green), which was contested by thirteen athletes on the following day.
