This list shows the largest cities in the European Union

Population and areas in relation to the administrative boundaries

All cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants are listed. The population figures refer to the cities within their administrative boundaries without politically independent suburbs. Since the practice of incorporation of suburbs differs widely between Member States of the European Union in the respective core city, this size is only partially comparable (see, eg. As the one hand, Berlin , Madrid and Rome , as well as the other Paris , Athens , Lyon and Brussels ) . Capital cities are written in bold , The Hague as the seat of government in italics . Berlin has been the largest city in the EU since the United Kingdom left the EU on February 1, 2020.
