Die Hard 4.0 (original title Live Free or Die Hard ) is an American action film from 2007 and the fourth of five parts in the Die Hard series . Directed by Len Wiseman .

Washington, DC and the entire east of the United States are threatened by a new kind of terrorism : A group around the disgraced Pentagon security expert Thomas Gabriel is bringing all computer networks in the country under their control on Independence Day on July 4th, and thus the infrastructure - Transportation, communication, electricity - almost completely to a standstill. This triggers a fire sale .
After the attack on the FBI network, John McClane should initially only pick up the hacker Matthew Farrell and bring him for interrogation. Attempts to kill Farrell are still in his apartment, and only with McClane's help can he escape. It turns out that Farrell and seven other hackers gave Thomas Gabriel access to the entire eastern network of the United States under the pretext of testing a novel security system. Gabriel's followers manage to kill all the other hackers except Farrell.
When McClane realizes that Gabriel is cleverly using the standard mechanisms of the authorities he is attacking in order to preoccupy them with himself, he takes the reins and chases the gang of criminals together with Farrell.
The fire sale is a tool Gabriel uses to steal all of the United States financial information that was secured in a camouflaged NSA branch after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . With the help of the hacker Warlock , McClane and Farrell find out about this and set out to stop Gabriel.
After McClane has eliminated almost half of all opponents, his daughter is kidnapped by Gabriel and held prisoner as leverage. Farrell is also captured, but can first encrypt all data that Gabriel has brought into his possession. With Farrell and Lucy McClane hostages, Gabriel escapes. After an extensive chase, while the McClane tried to flee from an F-35B fighter jet in a truck , he succeeded in rendering all criminals, including Thomas Gabriel, harmless. His daughter and Farrell also survive and, much to McClane's annoyance, begin to take an interest in each other.
